Ways to Recycle Your Old Wood Waterbed Frame

Around the mid-eighties, soft-side waterbeds were all the rage. As quickly as their popularity spiked, it soon plummeted leaving a lot of people wondering what to do with their old bed frame. Waterbeds used to require giant, bulky hard sided frames to hold the mattress in place. Recently, breakthroughs in the science of waterbeds have allowed consumers to buy waterbed mattresses that fit on a normal bed frame. This cut out the need for the special, oversized wooden bedframes once meant specifically for waterbeds leaving customers wondering: What can I do with my old waterbed frame? Don’t let your old bedframe spend the rest of its life rotting in a land mine. Instead, put it to use in a few eco-friendly ways.

Don’t want to buy a new bedframe? There are plenty of mattresses that come custom fit to fit inside of the old waterbed frame, leaving about an inch of space to tuck in sheets and comforters. These mattresses are called waterbed inserts. You do not need to use a box spring with these mattresses, and the mattress itself does not need to be flipped – only rotated. Using a waterbed insert mattress in the existing frame eliminates the need to buy a new box spring, headboard, sheets, and bedding to fit your new mattress saving you quite a bit of money. It also saves you the hassle of figuring out what to do with your old frame! Simply plop a new mattress in the frame and go about your business. No need to find a new frame to match the existing décor or worry about having to replace the furniture.

Tired of the bedframe and want to get it out of your house once and for all? In the older wood waterbed frames, the wood used is typically plywood and 2 x 6 pine that can be salvaged and used for many different projects. Give your old waterbed frame new life by turning it into a new, functional piece of furniture like a nightstand or bookcase. Benches are a popular item crafted from old bedframes. Additionally, the headboard can work just as well on a traditional bed as it did on the waterbed. With a little bit of research and power tool knowledge, you could craft a whole new platform bedframe out of your old waterbed frame! Old wood waterbed frames were usually large and therefore house a lot of pieces of wood to experiment with as you please.

If you’re tired of your old waterbed mattress and feel it’s time for a change, there’s no need to stress over what to do with your bedframe. You can give your bedframe a second lease on life (and channel your creativity) by turning it into a DIY project to enhance other rooms in your house. Or, if that doesn’t suit you, simply keep the old bed frame and replace the waterbed mattress with an insert. Both of these solutions are eco-friendly and will eliminate your stress and worry.
