NOTE: St. Louis Green is no longer recycling mattresses!
New way to get rid of your old bed
Buying a new mattress and wondering what to do with the old worn out set? St. Louis Green has a solution for disposing of them that you won’t lose any sleep over. Have it removed and get it recycled responsibly. The non-profit organization recently publicly announced the program on local news station Fox 2 during their Precious Earth news segment. The program aired Saturday July 27 2013.
Solving a St. Louis City and County Problem
The conversation between Craig Jung from St. Louis Green and Andy Banker revolved around an area wide problem what to do with the old mattress and boxspring. Mattress dumping around alleys, dumpster, and alongside of roads and streets were just some of the problems mentioned. Untimely large bulk pick up days, companies that don’t want them are just some of the other issues.
Landfills and incinerators deal with nearly 4,500,000 mattresses and just as many box springs they are heavy and they are bulky taking up to 25 cubic feet of much needed landfill space
Where can I recycle my mattress and how much will it cost?
St. Louis Green has been ramping up the program since April 2013 with some local residents and a few local mattress retailers. On August 1st, they will start accepting mattresses that are dropped off their local Maryland Heights warehouse.
The cost to bring your old mattresses and box-springs to them for recycling for free, in addition for a low fee they can also provide a pick up and removal service which can be set up with a phone call to their metro office 314 222 8004 you can also email them at email@example.com for more information. Their facility can be found just off Dorsett Rd. at the end of the industrial cul-de-sac, behind the Post-Dispatch warehouse.

What do they do with them?
They cut them up according to Craig. They open them up and remove the padding. The top padding they sell to companies that make carpet padding. The insulating layer called the shotty pad is sold to guys that make archery targets diverting over a million pounds a week from landfills. Wood from foundations / boxsprings is mulched. The steel metal coils are baled and recycled. Participating mattress retailers include Weekends Only, Verlo Mattress, and STL Beds.
