Shopping Latex Mattresses

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Let’s Shop for Latex Mattresses! Today we will look at a common trick of the trade and mention a few key things to look for when shopping for a new latex mattress. It seems what’s old is new again with a few twists, Natural organic latex mattresses are no different and are the newest rage in bedding. It seems in the midst of this rage there is some confusion and at STL Beds in St. Louis Missouri our customers are asking the very same questions you are, so we thought we would address the question. Can I buy a quality latex mattress for less than $1000.00?

What Should We Ask About All-Natural Latex Mattresses

When it comes to all-natural latex mattresses unfortunately most of us have no idea what to look for or what questions to ask. Without getting into the nitty gritty details and specifications there are basically two different types.

  1. Organic Latex Mattresses
  2. Hybrid latex mattresses

Hybrids are built using minimal amounts of latex rubber, sometimes as little as 1/2 inch, ranging in thickness up to 4 inches, making up a very small part of a mattress that may be 10 – 15 inches thick or more. This results in a mattress built mostly of cheaper-to-buy and cheaper-to-sell fillers like polyester fiber fill, super soft foam, and sometimes even lower-grade memory foam. This is done to get the customer’s attention knowing that today natural no toxic chemicals latex rubber is all the rage. These cheaper-built mattresses also require fire retardant chemicals to meet government burn safety standards, which are part of code FR1633.

On the website What’s The Best Mattress we have seen a number of people complain that their latex beds have developed body impressions and when they went back to their dealer they found that their so-called latex bed was a composite of latex and many other materials like we have mentioned above. To their surprise, these other materials broke down rapidly. Their salesperson either forgot or neglected to tell them that their bed was not all built using quality latex rubber from top to bottom. They also neglected to mention these other materials cost considerably less and do not have the overall durability of latex rubber.

Are You Getting What You Paid For

So how can you tell if you are getting what you paid for? A simple rule to remember is that if it costs the same or less than a traditional mattress and boxspring there is a good chance the mattress was built using very little to no latex. You can also ask to see a written spec breakdown or cutaway of a mattress. If the salesperson cannot show or tell you a bed composition leave and go to another store or contact the manufacturer for the information you are seeking.

Here is a fairly good measurement of a mattress’ quality to take note of. An all-natural latex rubber mattress will cost about the same as or slightly less than a Tempur-Pedic memory foam mattress or Select Comfort Sleep Number Airbed. With some simple research, we think you will find them not only a healthy sleep alternative but a longer-lasting one as well. Ultimately that will mean a cheaper and better value for you and your family in the long run. Be sure to do your homework and you will not be short-changed and you can rest assured that your next mattress is a true all-natural latex rubber mattress from top to bottom.
