Mattress That Stays Cool

With all of the different materials being used in the production of a mattress, which mattresses will keep me cool through the night so I don’t sweat?

A persons body temperature plays a significant role in the sleep process and determines whether we feel awake or tired, so it should be no surprise that we would want to purchase a mattress that will not sleep to hot or to cold.

Do Memory Foam mattresses sleep cool?
Do Mattress and boxsprings sleep cool?
Do All Natural Latex mattresses sleep cool?

Today’s blog will not recommend brands or models, rather it will get into the details that make various brands and their specific mattress models sleep cooler. The truth is that it very much depends on the specific mattress not just the brand. At STLBeds it’s our belief that many mattress brands like Tempur Pedic have gotten a bad wrap for sleeping hot, when in truth most of Tempur Pedic’s beds for most people do not sleep hot. Not two people are equally sensitive to sleeping temperature, so while one person could sleep cozy comfy the other could be miserable and sweating.

This discomfort is because the body will turn on its natural cooling system in the form of perspiration therefore decreasing body temperature. When our bedroom temperature is lowered the body boosts cellular metabolism thus our body temperatures. In summation if your bedroom temperature is too high sleep can still be achieved, however the quality of sleep will not be as good as if the room temperature was lowered.

So mattresses will assist in heat related sleep issues? There is not a blanket answer to this question, no pun intended. However in addition to maintaining comfortable room temperature we suggest looking through some of these other common heat causes and solutions we have provided.

Open cell and closed cell foams are commonly used in mattresses and also used for energy efficient insulation for construction. As a rule of thumb closed cell foams used for insulation makes for a better insulator by trapping warm air in a house, while blocking cold air from coming in. Memory foams and polyurethane foams used in traditional coil spring brand name mattresses are very similar in that open cell will allow air to move more freely and in the case of mattresses this is important for a more suitable sleep temperature. Some memory foam manufacturers also will have sculpted foams or added hundreds of holes drilled all the way through them. Both can be affective ways to make a memory foam bed sleep cooler.

Be careful of mattresses and boxsprings that use fluffy materials like polyester fibers, lofty cotton batting, both allow air to circulate more freely but have a negative side affect. The affect is body impression or sagging in the mattress surface.

Mattress solutions that typically sleep cooler are all natural latex rubber mattresses. Their pinhole cores a natural result of the manufacturing process can increase mattress airflow significantly.
Softside waterbeds can also be a solution for people with issues of sleeping hotter. These state of the art designs not only completely eliminate motion but also allow you to control temperature individually on each side of the mattress with an adjustable thermostat. Be wary of foams and fibers that are added to the quilting.

Lastly consider mattresses that use natural or breathable fibers, fabrics, and fillers in their quilting such as wool or cotton. These will not only keep you cooler when it is hot but warmer when it’s cold. Also consider high quality high thread count sheets, breathable mattresses pads, and various comforters or bedspreads that are appropriate for seasonal changes.
