Indoor Air Quality

The quality of the air you breathe indoors while you sleep is a critical factor to your health and energy levels. As we sleep, our bodies repair themselves and what we inhale either improves or inhibits our bodies’ ability to heal. Surprisingly enough, our mattresses play a leading role in the air quality and help influence what substances enter our lungs, and eventually our bloodstreams. Some beds even release substantial amounts of toxic chemicals! It is pretty concerning to think that even with an air purification product, you are still exposed to the toxins and pollutants because your head is resting on the culprit that releases the chemicals directly into your lungs.

Mattress Composition and Toxins

There is much more to think about when selecting a new mattress apart from softness or hardness, size, and durability. Believe it or not, our mattresses’ composition and age have the potential to expose us to dangerous chemicals and toxins. Sometimes certain synthetic materials are treated with chemicals during the manufacturing process that can be slowly released over the lifetime of your bed. For example, synthetic memory foam is known to contain and slowly release chemicals such as tetrachloroethane, acetone, dimethylformamide, and vinilideine chloride, just to name a few. At least some of the chemicals used to manufacture, treat, and cook bedding materials are left behind in the finished product. In turn, they are eventually released in your bedroom.

The Degradation Process

How does this happen? Well, over time mattresses slowly break down and degrade into very tiny particles. As this happens, the chemicals that were used to treat the synthetic material are released into the air we breathe. Don’t assume that the chemicals are released for only a short time, though. As a synthetic mattress degrades, it releases chemicals into the air throughout its entire life.

Additional Causes of Poor Air Quality

There are other factors that can play a part in air quality, too. The following list includes just a few factors that can negatively affect your air quality while you sleep:

  • older mattresses have been treated with types of chemicals to repel dust mites
  • the cotton in nonorganic cotton mattresses has been treated with pesticides on a farm
  • glues and adhesives in nonorganic mattresses slowly release toxic chemicals into the air

If toxins weren’t enough, old mattresses even have the reputation for collecting dust, dirt, and allergens over time. These particles are expelled every time you plop down after a hard day’s work, causing a whole range of symptoms from allergy attacks to coughing fits. If you want to replace your dusty, antiquated mattress but don’t want a new one that is brimming with chemicals, don’t worry. There is a wonderfully clean solution.

Organic Mattresses to the Rescue

Organic materials such as natural latex have not been found to release the harmful chemicals that are released by synthetic memory foam. They lack the harsh, dangerous health risks and toxins that other mattresses contain. For this reason, organic mattresses help your body rest and recover better than their synthetic counterparts. Also, the lack of toxins improves your health, wellness, and even life expectancy.
