Mattress Construction

Basic Construction Overview

Mattress construction primarily the fabric can consist of materials such as wool, silk and layer upon layer of foam or cotton. Thick layers of padding are more likely than the springs to compress as they age. So look for quality materials. In any case, regularly rotate and flip your mattress if it is two sided. Be sure to rotate your box spring, but more importantly specifically follow your manufacturers instructions for detailed turn & flip intervals, otherwise even the most expensive mattress will fail you. Its like changing the oil in your car.

Foundation

A foundation (or box spring) can increase mattress life. It is true that a mattress on a new box spring can feel the same as a mattress on an old box spring however life expectancy can be reduced up to30 Percent. Most mattresses these days can last up to 10 years on a new box spring while a mattress on an old box spring will only last 6-7 years. Look for mattresses with steel reinforced box springs, they will add to longevity to the entire set and it assures a solid warranty.

Mattress Core

The mattress core is the most important part of the mattress in the support of the body. While the box spring is supporting the mattress, the mattress is supporting you. The core of the mattress is made up of steel coils. There are many theories of how to compare coils. One-way is coil count. This is the method of counting the total numbers of coils based on example;(a queen-sized mattress) and then comparing to another queen sized mattress. Another way to comparing is looking at the gauge or the thickness of the steel coils. Logic says the thicker the steel coil the stronger the coil but a major consumer magazine reported coil count doesn’t matter. Additionally, whatever a mattresses firmness level most sagging occurred in the padding not the springs. Coil design doesn’t necessarily affect a mattresses ability to withstand use and abuse; rather, it can shape the beds overall feel.

Upholstery

The upholstery you go with on top of the mattress is up to you. Keep in mind it directly affects the comfort of the body. Do you want to feel like you are sleeping on a cloud or feathers while getting the real support your body needs? If this is case we suggest you look into pillow top mattresses as an option. Do you want to feel like you are sleeping on a piece of plywood or the floor? Look for a mattress that has thinner upholstery layers and less of them. Neither one of these choices should lead you to become sleep deprived. To the contrary: you should get the same support from a pillow top mattress, as you will with a regular topped mattress. The number one myth about mattresses is harder is better.
