We have been writing for years about the advantages of two sided mattresses. It seems now more than ever a greater number of people have experienced the newer one side versions of mattresses being sold. Many of these same people are unhappy with the one sided beds and just want to back to the way mattresses used to be built. While they may not be the same as mattresses built in years past due to cost constraints of raw materials, double sided mattresses do offers some big advantages over today’s 1 sided beds. One question still seems to keep popping up over and over again: Doug, will you please share some names of Mattress Companies That Make Two Side Beds? Absolutely, and not only that I would encourage anyone to feel free to include mattress companies you know about that still build 2 sided beds to help grow our list and assist other people seeking out these hard to find mattresses.

Mattress Companies That Make Two Side Beds

To flip or not to flip that is the question?

Can a Pillow Top Mattress Be Flipped Over? The answer solely depends on the type of pillow top mattress you have. Whether you have a Euro Pillow Top or Traditional Pillow top doesn’t matter. What is of concern is whether or not the bed has the pillow top on both sides, meaning the top and the bottom side of the mattress or just on the top side only. Knowing this and you are half way to your answer.

No Flip Pillow Top Mattress

Today the majority of manufacturers use the one sided variety of bed which only has the pillow top cushioning that is located on the surface of the mattress. The builders claim that these non-flippable models are every bit as good as the old beds and have all but replaced their two sided predecessors. That they are better is debatable but with high quality foams and building materials one-sided versions really can mean less maintenance over the life of ownership. The most common complaint is that most people feel that manufacturers are using inferior building materials and that they don’t last so shop and compare things like steel, foam content, and foam density.

Can You Flip a Pillow Top Mattress

There is another way to identify the one sided mattress if you are not certain you own one. A 1 sided pillow top mattress often has a non-skid surface located on the bottom side. It typically is not very pretty and doesn’t feel very soft to the touch. This portion of the mattress should not be slept on or it could damage the mattress.

Double Sided or Two Side Pillow Top Mattress

Each side of the mattress more often than not looks identical to the other as the name implies. A Double Sided mattress has Two Sides and should be flipped over according to the warranty instructions or care instructions that were provided with the mattress. Turning over the mattress and rotating it end-to-end extends the mattress’s life. Not doing so can cause uneven wear due to the same persons body weight being in the same location every night which causes upholstery layers to compress and coil springs to fatigue and loose their spring.

Mattress care is important and two sided mattresses do have another advantage in that airing both sides of the mattress is possible. Whether you own a one sided mattress or a double sided version one note of caution: Thick pillow tops with lots of soft cushioning are notorious for developing body impression or indentations .Follow care instructions religiously or plan to purchase versions with higher quality layers of padding.

The bottom line one-sided mattresses can only be rotated 180 degrees turning mattress from head to toe.

Two sided versions should be turned over so that the top is now on the bottom. Rotating 180 degrees is also required turning the head of the mattress to the foot end. Turning and flipping intervals as required by the manufacturers warranty an important note is that you cannot flip or turn your mattress too much. Regular care promotes longer mattress life for either mattress. Sleep tight.

With the advent of the no flip one-sided mattress the 2-sided mattress has become little more than a memory.

The fact that a mattress doesn’t have to be flipped is highly touted by many salesmen and for a very good reason. Anyone who has ever tried to flip a king size mattress in a small bedroom with a ceiling fan knows the difficultly in having to flip a mattress over.

The wholesale cost of producing a one sided mattress should be less since it requires less materials and only one fire retarding barrier. Because of stricter fire retardantcy laws it is approximately 40 percent cheaper to fire proof one side of a mattress as apposed to the older styled mattresses with 2 sides.

Apples to apples retail prices of one-sided mattresses should also reduce the retail cost that the customer would have to pay. See # 2

Better quality materials should go into a one sided mattress since comfort layers are only on one side of the mattress.

One-sided mattresses as a rule seem to weigh less making them easier to handle.

One sided mattress manufacturers are using more quality materials such as Omalon, latex rubber, and visco elastic memory foam.

There are lot of choices of one-sided beds. Mattress manufacturers still offer the same great choices in comfort. Such styles as plush, firm, pillow top mattresses are just some of the choices you have when purchasing a one sided bed.

You can still use your old bedding inventory like mattress pad, comforter, and sheets saving you the expense of having to purchase new ones.

One-sided mattress choices still offer a wider variety of price ranges to appeal to mattress buyers than 2-sided beds, by offering everything from small to large budgets in mind.

Life expectancy of a one sided mattress can range from 1 year to 30 years depending on the quality & budget. Better mattresses will obviously last longer. Well-trained sales associates can help you with such things.

The last few years have been a time of change and turmoil in the bedding industry. Many new mattress ideas have come and many have just gone. One noteworthy change has been the shift from manufactures building two sided mattresses that could be turned over to the non-flippable one-sided mattresses that cannot. At a glance this may sound like a great idea, but on the flip side there may be some real disadvantages to take note of.

A lightweight mattress could mean the manufacture is skimping on construction.
Most ones sided beds are not very heavy, pick one up for your self and see. In years past we were told to purchase a heavier mattress. Heavier mattresses typically use a higher amount of steel and higher density foams. Both have traditionally been characteristics of a quality mattress and boxspring.

Cannot flip the mattress over to allow the foams to rest and restore.
Polyurethane foam when not allowed to rest will break down and compress faster shortening the mattresses overall useful life.

There is the possibility of hygiene issues due to the fact that the mattress cannot be flipped over to allow for use of the reverse side.
With the dead skin cells, dust particles dirt and dander concentrated on one side of your mattress, your little dust mites don’t have far to travel for lunch. More dust and dirt could lead to potentially more allergy issues. People that are affected by these things may want to consult their physician or salesman to help them maintain a cleaner one sided mattress environment.

One-sided mattresses may have a higher concentration of dust mites and allergens.
See #3

If one side of the mattress becomes damaged or heavily soiled a very big problem cannot be overlooked.
If a one-sided mattress has a surface that is damaged or soiled you have no flip side to go to as an alternative. You may very well just have to live with the hole your dog dug in your sleep surface or that stain you could not remove.

One less side on your mattress could mean ½ the normal mattress life of a 2-sided mattress.
There is much debate on this one issue alone.

Most one sided mattresses still cost as much as two sided mattresses that were available only a year ago.

Two sided mattresses are flipped so that each side can be rested.
This gives the comfort layers a chance to restore themselves and bounce back helping to minimize and even prevent body impressions.

Body oils and perspiration could become twice the problem since the one side never gets a break.
We would encourage a quality absorbent mattress pad to help protect you mattress.

The no flip mattress ticking cover or fabric is 50% more likely to show wear and even breakdown.
Faster wear is very likely to develop especially in the poly fill fiber and quilted foam layering. This reveals itself in flattening in the cover and obvious body impressions.

With these things in mind you be the judge. Please comment below or email with your one-sided mattress experience.

Do they still make two sided mattresses? The answer is yes; it was commonly thought that a two-sided mattress was a thing of the past. Thanks to manufacturers like King Koil, Symbol, Campbell Mattress Company and Englander you can once again discover the benefits attained from the hard to find two sided bed. Now that double sided mattresses are back on the market, the people who loved them once again have an alternative to the mass produced one-sided mattress.

Simmons Mattress Co. first introduced the one sided No-Flip Design in 2000. Simmons claimed that their new mattress was not only an improvement, but was also a more maintenance free mattress compared to its 2-sided predecessors. Not to be out done Spring Air introduced The NeverTurn™ Mattress. Many other mattress manufacturers followed their lead with single sided beds and virtually maintenance free ad campaigns such as Sealy and Serta.

Nearly all remaining mattress companies followed suit when more government regulation of the industry was introduced. On July 1st, 2007 (CPSC) a safety law was passed requiring all mattress sets built & imported into the United States to comply within a strict performance standard involving fires. Before this time mattresses had a top and bottom side that made either surface useable for sleeping on. Most 2 sided mattress manufactures warranty guidelines required that the mattress not only be turned but also flipped completely over about 4 times a year. (Every three months) This turning and flipping of a mattress promoted more even wear in the sleeping surface of the bed.

Most double-sided mattresses were thin by today’s standards, and were heavy and limp. Each side of the coil spring unit was upholstered with natural materials such as cotton, coconut husks, and even horsehair as insulation padding. In the beginning buttons on both sides of the mattress were connected by a chain. This stabilization method was the primary way of keeping the upholstery from shifting and buckling. Later quilting machines and polyurethane foam eliminated the need for buttons and expensive natural fibers.

In the 1990’s up through 2007 the old mattresses with 2 sides were still a struggle for one person to flip and most people ignored or forgot to follow the warranty directions unknowingly voiding their warranties. Unfortunately this neglect causes the layers upon layers of foam and padding to compress. Today’s mattresses require just as much or if not more maintenance than ever before. It is the industries hope that sales people will recommend monthly flipping and rotation of the mattress when it is applicable, helping to extending mattress life.

An uncomfortable fact was thought to be that a one-sided mattress with its single sleeping surface would only last half as long and a double sided mattress. In the past many of these mattresses lived up to the concerns. Today mattress manufacturers seem to be replacing cheaper foams and polyester fiber with more durable materials such as latex and visco-elastic memory foam, which do not tend to flatten or break down as quick.

The jury is still out, but the thought is that the reintroduction of the 2 sided mattress and their two identically-finished sides, will offer a person twice as much life. The notion of having 2 sleeping surfaces also suggests that the Comfort Life® of a double side bed should be significantly increased as compared to mattresses that cannot be turned over. Two sleeping surfaces additionally provides users with a proverbial spare tire if you will, so if you were to spill something, the puppy makes a puddle, or bodily fluids were to create an irremovable stain, the other side could act as a back up sleeping surface.

Conspiracy thinkers contend that buyers only get half the mattress for the price while profits are on the increase. They will be happy to know that once again their love affair with the mattress that can be flipped over shall be rekindled. So now that all of us can once again find the good ole double sided mattress, all that is left to do is contact our local dealers and take one for a test rest. With that being said, this bedtime story ends just like every good story should on “an upside” now that two sided mattresses are back and we all once again have “a flip side” to our beds.
