Future of Organic Bedding

Transcription of video conversation about the Future of Organic Bedding

L: Do you think for the next generations, organic materials in their beds in their clothing in their products in their toys, do you think that will be the default, in the next generation it won’t be something you seek out with a specialized kind of weariness it will be that’s the way we make things the way we consume things.

N: To be a common standard of living, lets hope that it goes that way, and I do think it will go that way and unfortunately I believe were not going to have the choice as much and that’s fine I think the answers to our issues.

N: I mean if we were all raising sheep, I mean wool’s been around since even before the bible, there’s a reason why it keeps being there and, there again.

N: We have the means sort of like the energy questions, in bedding we have the means and you and Savvy Rest is the forefront of making sure this happens.

N: We have the means to grow the fibers we need to grow the fibers we need without harming the sheep or the earth, The sheep have one of the less impacts on earth as far as body weight and what it eats, the wool is also a byproduct of that process; Wool is a byproduct of a growing activity that is harmless to the earth and very ancient, and people know that wool needs to be shed in order for the sheep to grow more wool it’s very harmful for the sheep to keep growing that wool.

L: What do you think is the future for organic wool, we’ve noticed that our interest in our products is growing and it even has stayed steady in economic ups and downs people are expressing more and more interest in organic mattresses and wool products but it’s not mainstream.

N: I do think that it will continue to evolve I think we are just seeing the beginning of it, one thing about the green trend is that we sort of use this one out of necessity the fact that it’s more expensive is due to supply and demand if the the growth is the the supply is there which is great we can bring some of the history back to the united states the last thing I see is the market trend going into other markets and other ends of the spectrum, and it’s sort of in the upper class among buyers where as organic is a luxury item

N: Also I want to see us produce products for the people who couldn’t necessarily afford it because lets face it where do people spend more than eight hours a day at night, it’s really a sanctuary.

About organic mattresses

Our Savvy Rest Mattress is a great choice for people that want to purchase a mattress that can have a positive impact on their health, the environment, and the indoor environment where they sleep. Savvy Rest Mattresses are built using both raw materials that are sustainable but also raw materials that will degrade when disposed of in our precious landfills. Potentially harmful chemical Off Gassing from added fire retardants is a concern and it is found in nearly every modern mattress built today. So what is the remedy? It’s simple non toxic certified organic wool. It’s sustainable and it naturally retards flames in a manner that not only complies with all federal fire safety laws but exceeds them. Their really durable non toxic fabric cover is made from certified organic cotton and it too is very sustainable . Finally natural botanical latex rubber has it all sustainability, is non toxic, and may possibly be the most durable mattress core offered in mattresses today.

Organic Wool Mattress Topper Pads

Traditional mattresses use many man made materials within their construction. Polyurethane foam, polyester fiber, and memory foam are just some of the contents used in the sleeping surface of your new mattress all of which are made from petrochemicals. If you are currently sleeping on one of these mattresses the fact is that your body is positioned less than one inch from possibly harmful toxins. Unfortunately this exposure comes in the form of our skin, lungs, bodies, and the air that we breathe throughout the night. So why not add an inexpensive insulating layer between you and the mattress? One of the best and cheapest solutions is are Organic Wool Topper Pads.

Price Organic Wool Topper Click Photo

About Organic Wool Mattress Toppers

Organic wool toppers are available in a variety of price ranges and sizes to fit your needs and your budget. As you may or may not know one of the features that make them so popular is the fact that wool has incredible moisture wicking abilities and that can keep you toasty warm in the cold winter months and cool as a cucumber in the summer. Inherently organic wool toppers are dust mite resistant making them friendlier to those of us with dust mite allergies.

How to compare Organic Wool Toppers

There are important things that you want to look for when you buy an new mattress topper for example: Learning the benefits of organic wool.

Topper thickness: Many companies put a lot of emphasis on this number. It can be a misleading number and is not the most important factor. As you will find toppers can come in thicknesses ranging from blanket thin, one inch, two inches, and even 3 inches and beyond this really doesn’t tell you much. The fact is you want to know the fill power.

Fill Power: Fill power is not a number of fluff like topper thickness which can simply flatten out over time due to lack of fill materials are highly lofted. Fill power is the exact amount of organic wool or other material used to fill a square foot of topper. The more wool used the higher the number, the less wasted space and air making the topper heavier and more valuable. Ask for the fill power number when purchasing a stuffed or filled topper.

Cover Make Up: What the fabric cover is made of. The material cover is usually made of cotton and the wool and should be certified organic. Ask or look for the certification of purity. Be sure to know if the cover is made from certified materials such as cotton to ensure a more chemical free topper. Things to consider is the material the cover is made from and the thread count per square inch. These are a couple of key factors in determining the difference between cheaper low priced, low quality, organic toppers and long lasting, certified, high fill power, high thread count toppers.

Organic Wool Topper Care:

Do not wash, as the organic wool toppers and the organic cotton used will likely shrink.

One of the best ways to keep your topper fresh is to air it out. I know this might sound silly but it is no different then when we open our house up to air it out. Our suggestion is putting the topper in direct sunlight in the fresh air outside at least once a month.

Use an organic mattress protector over your mattress and organic topper this will protect it against soiling and staining. These can be removed and laundered.

To keep wool fibers loose, free, fluffy and comfy shake the topper vigorously and as often as possible. As mentioned previously regular sunning is best.

Use a nontoxic spot cleaner if necessary.

Benefits of Organic Wool

Transcription:

L: Hi Nathan thank you for joining us.

N: Thank you for having me.

L: We would like to have you explain to us and to other folks some general things about wool and organics that will be helpful to people thinking about getting a mattress.
So first of all why would you put wool in a mattress don’t you just want a blanket over you?

N: No that’s a great question and every person is going to have a different opinion.
It would be fair to say that wool has certain attributes that are going to be advantageous to anybody to use it in their bedding.

N: The reason why you are feeling that comfort is that wool has the ability to wick moisture away and basically take it from the body and move it through the fibers in a fashion that the body likes. And what that does is slow down the heart rate of the body multiple tests have been proven that wool creates the perfect micro environment.

N: You have these pockets of air that will allow you to be warm in the winter and cool in the summer, it is a misconception that wool is hot, warm, it’s true to people because they’re using wool as blankets, where as if they would use wool sweater in the summer they would find that it would stay cool. A good example is all the top suits that are made presidents to senators are wearing wool suits even during the summer-weight and that’s the key thing that it allows airflow and moisture.

N: You also have attributes such as in nature wool is more resilient fiber compared to cotton that mats down and is thicker.

N: Wool it also depends on the micron you’re using.

L: What is a micron?

N: A micron is the width of the fiber as it is measured in millionths, one millionths or two millionths, the microns we use is considered a medium course because the most resilience

L: So it stays soft and durable.

N: Wool fiber has a natural way of being resilient towards dust mites, mildew, anything of that kind of nature and it has a self cleaning mechanism to it and that’s done because on the fiber it has scales that are running on the sheath of the fiber that acts as a vending mixture that allows for the pick up of moisture and stop debris from entering.

N: The paperwork or the trail is the core idea it’s a way to be comfortable at each stage of the process, when the wool is being grown on the sheep and it goes over to the scouring mill the scouring mill is just as accountable as the farmer so it allows for accountability that this guy has to talk to this guy and so on and so forth.

Elite hotels all over the world know the advantages of having organic Egyptian cotton sheets on their beds to keep clients coming back. These sheets provide not only a luxurious and distinct experience for their guests; they are also better for the environment. These organic sheets are well worth another look for many different reasons.

Organic cotton is becoming very popular for many environmental reasons.

Only cotton that is grown without pesticides and other harsh chemicals can be considered an organic material. Growers that raise organic cotton reduce the amount of chemicals that enter into the soil and also the local water table. By not adding chemicals to the soil keeps the local vegetation safe for consumption by the local wildlife. When chemicals are added to the soil and vegetation starts to grow in the contaminated soil, it can cause birth defects and diseases in many types of wildlife. By keeping the soil free of chemicals helps to stop chemical residue from seeping into the local water sources, such as lakes, ponds, streams and rivers. Contaminated water not only has detrimental effects on wildlife, it also effects the local human population too. Growing organic cotton crops is beneficial to the surrounding environment and all creatures great and small that live there.

Allergies are on the rise among many individuals.

Vast majorities of people do not realize that the sheets that they sleep on every night can cause their allergies to flare up at bedtime. The reason for this is because of the chemicals that are used in the growing process of the cotton that the sheets are made out of. Organic cotton is toxin free and helps to reduce the amount of allergens that one is exposed to on a daily basis. By not having to worry about allergies flaring up at bedtime, also helps to insure a more comfortable nights rest.

What makes organic Egyptian cotton fibers different from other cotton fibers is the length.

Organic Egyptian cotton fibers are longer then its more common counterpart. By the fibers being longer, they also last longer and are more durable when woven into sheets. With these types of sheets lasting longer, saves the consumer money in the long run. Many of us have had to replace bed linens every so many years. This is not so with organic Egyptian cotton sheets since they are more durable. Since organic cotton is free from chemicals, the fibers also do not break as easy and do not become brittle, fray, or ball up and pill. By being chemical free helps the linens to last longer too.

Organic Egyptian cotton sheets have high moisture absorption and are extremely breathable when compared to other types of fibers. The surface of the linens feels smoother and cooler in the summer months or in warmer climates. Those that suffer from skin conditions also prefer organic Egyptian cotton sheets because of the breathability next to the skin.

Are organic Egyptian cotton sheets expensive?

Purchasing a set of organic Egyptian cotton sheets will cost a little more then other types of bed linens. These organic sheets will far outlast cheaper bed linens and will not have to be replaced after a few years. By investing in higher quality sheets saves not only money in the long run, they help consumers to do something good for the environment every time they slip between these luxurious cotton sheets.

When a person is getting ready to welcome a new arrival into the world,

much thought is given to every single detail possible to make sure the infant is welcomed into a safe, clean and comfortable environment. Parents want to do the best for their baby and this can include feeding breast milk exclusively for a number of months, checking around the home for any type of toxic chemicals and searching out the best possible clothing, blankets and bedding to ensure your newborn has the best possible environment.

Have you given any thought as to the type of baby bedding materials you will be purchasing for your newborn?

You will want to look for top quality chemical free items in baby bedding materials to provide your infant with the best night’s sleep. Seek out organic bedding products are all natural and certified to be completely free of any chemicals, toxins or dyes which could be harmful to your baby’s respiratory system and lungs and may cause serious allergies.

By purchasing organic crib mattresses and bedding, you are supporting organic farming and manufacturing and making a conscientious choice to do what is best for your baby. People that purchase organic bedding and other products are reducing the amount of contaminates, pollutants and irritants in the environment and making sure their new baby can rest peacefully and comfortably. Organic bedding is free from pesticides and as more people are going “green,” it is not as difficult as it once was to find organic products.

Nothing is more important to a parent-to-be than ensuring their new arrival is safe and healthy.

Unfortunately, what many parents do not realize is that sometimes the safety features included in infant bedding can actually be harmful to their baby. Fire retardants used in infant bedding can have harmful effects on a baby’s lungs and may dangerous chemicals contained with in the mattress materials or the polyurethane foam. Polyurethane foam contains petrol chemicals and fire retardants which can put off gases that can be inhaled when the baby sleeps and might cause serious health-related problems later on in life.

Organic cotton baby bedding such as blankets and crib mattresses

allow for better air circulation throughout the product, which allows a sleeping infant to rest better and breathe easier. Another advantage of organic bedding is the reduction of allergic reactions caused by chemicals and parasites found in infant bedding. With better air circulation, there is a more consistent level in body temperature and this can be especially important if your baby was born prematurely and needs extra help keeping a constant body temperature.

When expecting a new baby, it pays to check into the advantages of using organic cotton bedding, clothing and blankets. A parent should check labels on bedding and blankets to make sure it is actually organic and made from 100% real cotton and contains no other materials. Although organic cotton bedding may be a bit more expensive than traditional bedding, when weighing the pros and cons, many parents agree it is money well spent. Your new baby will spend more than half of its first three months sleeping, so why not take the time and check into the health and safety benefits of organic bedding, you will be glad you did.

There are many dangerous and toxic chemicals released from traditional mattresses,

which makes it a significant source of indoor pollution, sleep disorders and health-related problems. With the increased focus being placed on going “green,” many consumers are interested in ways to go about decreasing indoor pollution in the home and finding out ways to improve the environment. Many manufacturers are hearing the consumer cry for more environmentally-friendly products and organic bedding products are easier to find and more affordable, than in times past.

As adults, we spend a third of our lives in bed, and this is mores so true with infants and children. When we lay down to sleep at night, most of us assume our blankets, sheets and bedding are safe and clean. However, what most people do not realize is that during our sleep time, toxic chemicals, fumes and vapors, are absorbed into our body through the skin and lungs when we breathe. Our bedrooms can be one of the most toxic rooms in the home, which is why people need to check into the advantages of organic bedding.

The conventional mattresses sold in America are manufactured using petroleum based products

such as polyurethane foam which has been saturated in antimicrobial solution, chemical dyes, stabilizers, fire retardants and surfactants. These chemicals release gases from the mattress into the air and when inhaled and absorbed can cause such health problems as cancer, nausea and vomiting, allergies, chronic bronchitis, impaired lung functions and headaches. By removing any external toxins from your bedroom, you are doing your part to be healthier and also supporting the market for organic products as well.

One way to “green” up your bedroom is to purchase an organic mattress, which is made from all natural cotton and free from synthetic materials and petrochemicals. Organic mattresses breathe better, which means a more comfortable night’s sleep and a stable body temperature. An organic mattress offers more pressure relief than memory foam, which means better spinal alignment and comfort. Natural organic bedding contains naturally antibacterial properties, is resistant to mold and mildew and is resistant to dust mites, which are known to be a trigger for asthmatics.

Organic mattresses are equal in cost to premium quality traditional mattresses

and are a good value, not only for your health and comfort, but also because of durability. Many organic mattresses will last for up to 30 years, while a conventional mattress will generally last for a maximum of 10 years and will break down. People that have switched from using a traditional mattress to an organic one are impressed with the quality and agree it was well worth the bit of extra money spent.

Organic cotton mattresses are non-toxic and contain no harmful, synthetic chemicals

which is both better for your home and the environment. An organic mattress is a natural alternative to petrochemical based mattresses and will cause less of a chance of an allergic reaction in those with a sensitive respiratory system. When looking for a healthier, more comfortable night’s sleep, checking into the benefits of an organic mattress might be just what you need.

What is it and where can you find it?

Organic memory foam, all natural memory foam, certified organic memory foam. What is it and why can’t you find these descriptions of memory foam anywhere in the mattress industry?

That is a good question. It seems this is because according to every manufacturer of memory foam mattresses, including the manufacturers utilizing 20-30 percent biobased materials, a memory foam mattress containing more than that will turn into a goo. Here is a question for you. Do we want to start calling a mattress 30 percent biobased, “natural”? These days you can find Earth friendly memory foam or even eco friendly memory foam from manufacturers, but none of them I have talked with are claiming their memory foams to be certified organic memory foam, organic memory foam, or even all natural. Their only claim was more eco friendly and environmentally friendly.

Researching natural memory foam

In my research to find out more about natural memory foam mattresses on the World Wide Web I stumbled across myessentia.com. They have an interesting claim; they sell it. After doing some research on their site, I came to 2 conclusions. 1 is that Essentia is privy to completely cutting edge memory foam technology and knows something the entire rest of the memory foam mattress industry does not know and if so f that is the case, kudos to them.

My opinion however is this; disappointment for a couple reasons. I asked for a sample of the natural memory foam which was never sent. So I guess I’ll never know. So I still don’t know if Essentias’ claim to be the only manufacturer of natural memory foam in the world true is a true one. After all it it was their claim to be a natural memory foam yet their description calls it 100% natural latex, plant extracts, and organic essential oils.

As an experienced mattress professional I have not only sold the leading manufacturer of memory foam Tempur Pedic, but I also slept on one. My feeling is that memory foam neither feels like nor is in any way, shape, or form similar in construction. Then again I’m not an engineer.

Essentia’s Memory Foam Motives

I am curious though of a couple things. I wander if Essentia is trying to capitalize on the popularity of memory foam? Does Essentia believe all natural latex and memory foam are the same thing? Essentia please feel free to explain your position or tell us how your all-natural latex rubber can be called natural memory foam other than the fact there is no industry standard in place of what is what or what something can be called. The numbers I have heard in recent months claim even the most eco friendly bio based memory foam mattresses utilize no more than 30 percent biobased oils in their construction.

Nonetheless this raises some interesting mattress industry questions. So mattress buyers, industry manufacturers, and mattress retailers can or should the industry blur the lines between all natural latex and memory foam? Should we call latex the all-natural memory foam?

Do you think such a claim would only confuse the mattress market place even more?
Should we as an industry capitalize on memory foams extraordinary popularity by calling all natural latex memory foam.?

Sure latex can have a great feel and be nearly 100% pure. Some latex like the Dunlop process was engineered in the 1930′s while new modern updated engineering of latex manufacturing techniques like the Talalay Process have changed the playing field and offer a wider selection of feels. Memory foam unlike latex rubber is still the newest and most unique state of the art mattress technology to come along in recent years.

Perhaps the Industry will decide the issue if these two products are as different as apples and oranges. Debate and discussion may very well put such arguments to rest while answering the important questions when industry leaders put into place some uniform standards to it legitimizing all past, present, and future claims of natural, all natural, organic, and certified organic in the industry. Until then our industry is as wild as the old west.

A question we frequently get asked here at STL Beds is “ should organic beds have a comfort guarantee?” To which we reply “no” and then proceed to explain why.
First of all mattress retailers are selling people a product that is as chemical free and uncontaminated as possible. When it is returned to the store in the case of a comfort guarantee, it is anything but chemical free and uncontaminated.

In the case of St. Louis Missouri retailers, we would then have it “ properly sanitized” in order to comply with Missouri state law, which is similar to other state laws. If a store such as ours were to accept a returned mattress and have cleaned / properly sanitized, we will have introduced the very chemicals the mattress was designed to eliminate. In the case of removable mattress covers where dry cleaning would be possible, this too would introduce the very chemicals organic mattress buyers are trying to avoid.

Mattress retailers regularly offer comfort guarantees but not physicians, chiropractors and other health related professionals. However in each of these professional cases we have seen recommendation of everything from firm mattresses to soft, memory foam to latex and airbeds to waterbeds. Many of these same professionals have advised their patients with as many as 4 different types of mattresses only to make poor recommendations and not get it right. To our knowledge the only other professionals to miss 4 times and still get paid for what they do is the weatherman. We can only assume from medical professionals point of view that might be reason enough alone to offer a comfort guarantee on mattresses.

For smart mattress shoppers there are alternatives. Alternatives like all natural layers of latex rubber, which can be accessed by way of zippered cover. This zippered cover allows you to rotate and adjust the various different firmness layers to make it firmer or softer to meet your comfort and support needs. If your needs change you can purchase different firmness’s to recalibrate the mattress to your liking.

Unfortunately these comfort guarantees are not free and are a major reason for the increase of mattress retail prices today. In reality the dealer and the customer pay dearly for the privilege. The truth is a returned $3000.00 organic mattress if handled properly and legally is worth about as much as the used socks of a 7 years old boy who was just outside playing in the rain all day. Restocking fees and reselection do very little to cushion and offset the loss to the retailer. All customer will share in this loss and expense in the end.
