What is it and where can you find it?

Organic memory foam, all natural memory foam, certified organic memory foam. What is it and why can’t you find these descriptions of memory foam anywhere in the mattress industry?

That is a good question. It seems this is because according to every manufacturer of memory foam mattresses, including the manufacturers utilizing 20-30 percent biobased materials, a memory foam mattress containing more than that will turn into a goo. Here is a question for you. Do we want to start calling a mattress 30 percent biobased, “natural”? These days you can find Earth friendly memory foam or even eco friendly memory foam from manufacturers, but none of them I have talked with are claiming their memory foams to be certified organic memory foam, organic memory foam, or even all natural. Their only claim was more eco friendly and environmentally friendly.

Researching natural memory foam

In my research to find out more about natural memory foam mattresses on the World Wide Web I stumbled across myessentia.com. They have an interesting claim; they sell it. After doing some research on their site, I came to 2 conclusions. 1 is that Essentia is privy to completely cutting edge memory foam technology and knows something the entire rest of the memory foam mattress industry does not know and if so f that is the case, kudos to them.

My opinion however is this; disappointment for a couple reasons. I asked for a sample of the natural memory foam which was never sent. So I guess I’ll never know. So I still don’t know if Essentias’ claim to be the only manufacturer of natural memory foam in the world true is a true one. After all it it was their claim to be a natural memory foam yet their description calls it 100% natural latex, plant extracts, and organic essential oils.

As an experienced mattress professional I have not only sold the leading manufacturer of memory foam Tempur Pedic, but I also slept on one. My feeling is that memory foam neither feels like nor is in any way, shape, or form similar in construction. Then again I’m not an engineer.

Essentia’s Memory Foam Motives

I am curious though of a couple things. I wander if Essentia is trying to capitalize on the popularity of memory foam? Does Essentia believe all natural latex and memory foam are the same thing? Essentia please feel free to explain your position or tell us how your all-natural latex rubber can be called natural memory foam other than the fact there is no industry standard in place of what is what or what something can be called. The numbers I have heard in recent months claim even the most eco friendly bio based memory foam mattresses utilize no more than 30 percent biobased oils in their construction.

Nonetheless this raises some interesting mattress industry questions. So mattress buyers, industry manufacturers, and mattress retailers can or should the industry blur the lines between all natural latex and memory foam? Should we call latex the all-natural memory foam?

Do you think such a claim would only confuse the mattress market place even more?
Should we as an industry capitalize on memory foams extraordinary popularity by calling all natural latex memory foam.?

Sure latex can have a great feel and be nearly 100% pure. Some latex like the Dunlop process was engineered in the 1930′s while new modern updated engineering of latex manufacturing techniques like the Talalay Process have changed the playing field and offer a wider selection of feels. Memory foam unlike latex rubber is still the newest and most unique state of the art mattress technology to come along in recent years.

Perhaps the Industry will decide the issue if these two products are as different as apples and oranges. Debate and discussion may very well put such arguments to rest while answering the important questions when industry leaders put into place some uniform standards to it legitimizing all past, present, and future claims of natural, all natural, organic, and certified organic in the industry. Until then our industry is as wild as the old west.

A question we frequently get asked here at STL Beds is “ should organic beds have a comfort guarantee?” To which we reply “no” and then proceed to explain why.
First of all mattress retailers are selling people a product that is as chemical free and uncontaminated as possible. When it is returned to the store in the case of a comfort guarantee, it is anything but chemical free and uncontaminated.

In the case of St. Louis Missouri retailers, we would then have it “ properly sanitized” in order to comply with Missouri state law, which is similar to other state laws. If a store such as ours were to accept a returned mattress and have cleaned / properly sanitized, we will have introduced the very chemicals the mattress was designed to eliminate. In the case of removable mattress covers where dry cleaning would be possible, this too would introduce the very chemicals organic mattress buyers are trying to avoid.

Mattress retailers regularly offer comfort guarantees but not physicians, chiropractors and other health related professionals. However in each of these professional cases we have seen recommendation of everything from firm mattresses to soft, memory foam to latex and airbeds to waterbeds. Many of these same professionals have advised their patients with as many as 4 different types of mattresses only to make poor recommendations and not get it right. To our knowledge the only other professionals to miss 4 times and still get paid for what they do is the weatherman. We can only assume from medical professionals point of view that might be reason enough alone to offer a comfort guarantee on mattresses.

For smart mattress shoppers there are alternatives. Alternatives like all natural layers of latex rubber, which can be accessed by way of zippered cover. This zippered cover allows you to rotate and adjust the various different firmness layers to make it firmer or softer to meet your comfort and support needs. If your needs change you can purchase different firmness’s to recalibrate the mattress to your liking.

Unfortunately these comfort guarantees are not free and are a major reason for the increase of mattress retail prices today. In reality the dealer and the customer pay dearly for the privilege. The truth is a returned $3000.00 organic mattress if handled properly and legally is worth about as much as the used socks of a 7 years old boy who was just outside playing in the rain all day. Restocking fees and reselection do very little to cushion and offset the loss to the retailer. All customer will share in this loss and expense in the end.

The Cotton used for Gotcha Covered Organic Sheets comes from Turkey and is certified by Eco Cert and is internationally recognized. We have available a copy of their Eco Cert cotton certification. Part of the certification process is that it meets the minimum standard. No matter who is certifying the cotton, the land cannot be exposed to any synthetic fertilizers or pesticides for a minimum 3 years.

Next, the cotton is shipped to Thailand where it is spun into yarn, woven, cut, sewn and packaged all in one factory. The Thailand factory is compliant with the not for profit organization Eco Tex. Eco Tex is the European group intended to uphold certain eco friendly standards. They have certified that the Thailand factory is compliant to strict labor laws, up keep of the factory, cleanliness, and the caring for of its employees. The factory also complies with international fair trade laws. There are many companies that buy organic cotton, however after buying the organic cotton they fall short of most or all of the previous mentioned compliancy issues.

Gotcha Covered packages all of its organic sheets in biodegradable bags made for them from a cornstarch film and hemp. The only item that is not biodegradable is a small plastic zipper making it one of the most environmentally friendly packaged retail products sold today.

Gotcha Covered organic sheets are woven with 300 threads in a square inch and the construction is a sateen weave. Sateen is not an applied finish that makes it shiny it is actually achieved in the way that the yarn is woven. When you weave fabric there are yarns going one way and yarns going the other way and when you weave it together you get a piece of cloth. There are four threads that are next to each other and are woven warp and weft. In a sateen finish the four yarns are next to each other and then go over the one yarn in order to create the sateen weave, which gives it a luster and smooth, soft, quality finish on the surface area.

Gotcha Covered does not use any dyes or chemicals in their organic sheets while other companies use low impact dyes and finishing processes. Gotcha Covered has tried to keep their organic sheets as authentic as possible and only scours and combs their cotton. They use no bleach, no ammonia, or formaldehyde, which is commonly used in cleaning the long staple yarn. This is why you will sometimes see some tiny flecs of brown, which are bits and pieces leftover after scouring and combing the long staple yarn. Long staple yarn is the best yarn you can get as apposed to short staple yarn which typically has little stubbles at the top.

Many people are allergic to the chemicals that are put into the finishing processes used to make sheets. A low wrinkle sheet is an example of this which uses is a chemical finish to make them low wrinkle. Gotcha Covered does not use this process on their organic sheets. Many of these processes use dyes and cleaning methods, which utilize chemicals as well as lots of other things that happen during manufacturing. Unfortunately chemicals are often the necessary evil to achieve a certain look in sheets that people are looking for which can often result in chemical sensitivity or allergic reaction. Chemical over use is a concern for everyone especially those with allergies, asthma, and other respiratory issues. Other issues can include chemical sensitivity through by way of skin absorption developing into a simple irritant or a severe reaction. Gotcha Covered just wants to put forward a cleaner healthier sleeping surface alternative for its customers.

In the past organic sheets had been associated with all natural, green beds, and organic mattresses. Gotcha Covered has noticed a significant trend asserting that many sheet buyers are not just putting organic sheets on “green” mattresses. As an alternative many people are opting to include healthier layers of bedding such as mattress pads, protectors, and sheet sets to their existing non-green beds like memory foam beds, mattress & box springs, waterbeds, and airbeds for a healthier sleep environment.

No matter what you believe or stand for politically we know liberals and conservatives will agree on at least this one environmental issue , that Earth friendly mattresses are important to us all. When I first mentioned it to friends and family that we were going offer our customers the choice of organic mattresses, some laughed and scoffed accusing me of hopping on the green band wagon, while others said manufacturers didn’t go far enough. After listening to their opinions we decided to offer them what we what we thought was the best choice for our business, the planet, and our customers, and whether you believe an organic mattress is a good or bad idea, with a little organic mattress education and an open mind all readers will soon learn all natural mattresses may be the smartest invention since the invention of the wheel on this great planet we all share. Their non-toxic chemical free, replenishable, and customizable durable design makes the most well rounded mattress built today.

If absorption or inhalation of chemicals while your sleeping for 7-9 hours concerns you, we know you will be impressed with the beds organically designed surface cover, which is built from the replenishable resource cotton. This cotton is grown on land that is certified as organic. Not only that but the organic cotton is certified organic and is documented as such through strict oversight. This is to see to it that dangerous pesticides or herbicides are not being used in curing the growth process. When you are shopping be sure to ask for copies of the organic cotton certification.

Today all beds must meet or exceed the mandatory mattress fire retardant law, known as 16 CFR Part 1633. It is a performance standard that restricts heat discharge in the case of a mattress fire. The majority of mattresses are using chemicals to comply with this law; some have not been tested while others are known to be dangerous. There are only two ways you can avoid such exposure to chemicals. One is with a prescription from your doctor or locate a mattress that passes the federal burn tests using natural components like certified organic wool, which is used in many of the best organic mattress brands sold today.

Organic Mattresses from manufacturers like Land and Sky offer their top mattress covers in two versions. Zippered and non zippered, which are sewn shut using a traditional tape edged method. Although the zipper may not be a favorite choice of strict environmentalist, these people should reconsider, zipper models allow for replacement of bad parts, customization, and exchange of layers for comfort or health reasons. Most importantly we can save a landfill from the disposal of an entire mattress set. Mattresses are one of landfills biggest problems due to poor decomposition and the fact that they can take up more space than a refrigerator.

Lastly we will talk about the core mattress component Dunlop All Natural Latex Rubber. The Dunlop Process of making rubber all be it a process, is one of the most environmentally smart mattress components built today. This is becuase of its virtually chemical free composition, cleanliness, low odor, durability, and versatility. People always seem to question its durability and shouldn’t. It is all natural rubber not petro based foam. Rubber and its flexibility and elasticity are used from everything from rubber balls to car tires making it perfect for the construct of mattresses. Petro based foams are known typically for breaking down quickly causing deep uncomfortable body impressions in regular coil spring mattresses.

Do you think this ‘organic’ thing is getting out of hand?
I understand being choosy when it comes to the food you eat, but I just saw organic mattresses. Seems like a money grab to me.

As a retailer we have done our best to avoid ” money grab” products. 5 years ago I would have agreed 100% that an organic mattress was nothing more than a cash cow for the bedding industry. After much intense research and nearly 2 years of positive customer feedback, I believe that they may be the very best mattress choice available today.

Compare Organic Mattresses to Regular Mattresses.

1. Most typical mattresses wear out in eight years. Consumer Reports said that. In fact if you research organic mattress made from all natural latex foam rubber it typically offers great long lasting shape and support 15 to 20 years.
2. All natural latex rubber comes from a quick growth tree. Standard Polyurethane Foam (PU) foam in mattresses is a derivative from oil. Can’t grow that or replace it.
3. Standard PU foam in standard mattresses quickly gets body impressions or body indentations because companies opt to fill them with low-grade foam. Organic latex rubber does what rubber does best, bounces back and keeps it shape like a ball, tire, or rubber band.
4. PU foam is a synthetic chemical coagulation or plastic. Latex rubber is virtually chemical free and very simple in it composition.
5. Organic mattresses do not off gas and good ones have minimal smell. Conventional mattresses, memory foam mattresses, and even waterbeds have strong chemical smell when they are first unpackaged and chemical smells can linger for quite a long time.
6. Nearly every mattress made today brand name and non brand name uses chemicals to comply with federally mandated laws for fire safety and fire retardancy. Most organic mattresses comply naturally using organically raised wool to limit mattress burn rates and comply with the CPSC law TB1633FR in a healthy manner.
7. Chemicals used as fire retardants have not been tested in long term or short term sleep applications. The result for us is sales pitches from manufactures claiming only trace chemical amounts. So we really do not know what or if we are breathing nauseous chemicals and dealing with absorption of chemicals through the skin that we don’t understand much less what their affect might be.
8. Mattress manufactures are not required to disclose what chemicals are contained in mattresses to make them FR compliant. Do you know what is in organically raised wool? If it is certified wool like most organic mattresses, No chemicals.
9. Naturally grown thread made from organic cotton makes not only a high quality and very durable cover, but again limits the human body to no harmful chemical exposure. On the other hand the typical mattress and boxspring fabric cover is comprised of mostly synthetics with very minimal amounts of natural material.
10. One strips and rapes the Earths land while giving back absolutely nothing. The other is built from renewable, sustainable, replenishable, and healthy resources and is almost 100 recyclable.

My position is this, I am not sure where I stand on the whole carbon footprint thing, and quite frankly both sides of the issue scare me a bit. Example, recently I had a customer shopping organic beds that criticized our organic beds (optional) plastic zipper. This necessary evil allows a person the option to adjust the mattresses feel as they age and their firmness needs change. They could also replace single parts if they wore out or were defective. My customer did not connect the true organic nature of our bed. She basically started condemning my mattress by saying it wasn’t organic, yet she arrived at our store in her “hybrid” Toyota Prius not a bike and I pointed that fact out, fortunately we came to an organic understanding ant the result was that she purchase the mattress.

In summation the reality is that regular mattresses have been built for years by an industry that hasn’t cared or done much to speak of environmentally for years. Compare that to an emerging environmentally friendly, long lasting, comfortably supportive, and a virtually chemical free alternative at comparable prices. To me organic mattresses have become a no brainer and may very well become a mainstream mattress choice out of necessity.

The Water Works Sleep Center & STLBeds.com invites you to visit us at Healthy Planets 17th Natural Living Expo . We hope you will come visit us and test rest the newest and most exciting product to hit St. Louis bedrooms.

Win Free Tickets to This Event!

Adjustable Comfort Organic Mattresses

We are very proud of this healthy and better approach to eight hours of superior sleep. Land and Sky’s Organic Mattresses are a simple approach to better health through reduced nightly exposure to dangerous and harmful chemicals and toxins found in nearly every mattress manufactured today.

Mattresses that can include such toxins since the CPSC Consumer Product Safety Commissions 2007 mandate calling for regulated mattress fire retardantcy standards.

Mattress that are included with these possible hazards:

Mattress and Boxsprings

Memory Foam Mattresses

Waterbeds (Yes even waterbeds)

Airbeds

Latex Beds

Does Yours?

We were encouraged by Healthy Planet Magazine to show Saint Louis Missouri that in addition to diet and exercise that there is one more way to promote better health, and who knew it could be as easy as going to bed.

Sleeping on an Organic bed starts with 100 percent natural latex rubber built from an Earth friendly sustainable resource, the rubber tree. The milky white sap is extracted, whipped to a froth, and finally emptied into a form and baked. The finished foam rubber sheets vary in firmness and thickness and will be inserted into naturally made mattresses. Land and Sky’s all-natural organic mattresses are then covered with a certified organic cotton cover. The zippered cover is quilted for luxurious comfort with certified breathable and naturally moisture wicking organic wool. The wool not only adds comfort & breathabilty, but acts as a safer chemical free fire retardency barrier that only a handful of mattresses in the world offer today.

These Organic mattresses are available with coordinating foundations or use them on you existing platform. Custom comfort and firmness levels can be adjusted through out the life of your new mattress for just the right feel as your body changes. 3 of Land and Sky’s Organic Beds have this unique adjustable comfort feature:

Heaven & Earth
Zippered Rainforest
Meadow

You won’t be sacrificing quality. Land and Sky does this by replacing cheaper synthetic layers of polyurethane foam often found in today’s mattresses with the highest quality 100 percent all natural biodegradable latex rubber. Rubber is used in the construction of automobile tires, but flexible enough to have been used for a body formed fitted diving suite.
