What are the Top 10 Benefits of a Dual Water Bed Mattress or Bladder?

They cost more and are they really worth the extra one hundred dollars or so waterbed stores and online companies are asking for them? Here are just a few of the major benefits of a dual water bed mattress and the advantages they can provide.

Click Photo to Browse our Water Bed Mattresses

Waterbed Mattresses Move Too Much: Water mattresses or bladders as they are sometimes called are offered with more or less baffling. The more baffling the more wave control and support.

Individual Temperature Control: No more sweating or freezing. Dual mattresses should have 2 thermostat controls so each sleeper can regulate the desired temperature of their mattress to the exact temperature they choose. It gives each sleeper a specially controlled heat or cool zone.

Less Motion From One Sleeper To The Other: Having separate mattresses inside one waterbed provides more stability for each sleeper. No matter how much baffling a waterbed bladder has a dual system offers more wave control due to its individual containment. Since the water is not moving freely from one side to the other it automatically provides additional wave control and less disturbance through out the night.

Easier To Move: Drain waterbeds is usually a drawback of ownership. One piece mattresses that do not drain completely are larger and weigh more. With all of that being said dual waterbed mattresses cut that weight in half and are half the weight of their single bladder relatives.

Cheaper To Replace: Some stores will sell one half of a dual waterbed system. While they may not cut the price in half they often sell 1/3 for less than you can buy both.

Easier to locate a leak: There are two points to make here one, the water mattress is smaller and easier to handle during the leak finding process the other is that sometimes one mattress will have less water in it giving an indication there is problem.

Adjust the firmness For Each Sleeper: One of the questions most often asked about dual systems is can I fill my side to make it a little firmer? While a person can add more water the firm feel they get comes at a price. Essentially adding more water is over filling and over filling leads to stretching, a ballooned up feeling, and quicker mattress failure. We suggest purchasing a more supportive water mattress.

Individual Sleeping Comfort: Yes you can have a wavier mattress on one side and a more wave controlled mattress on the other. Some stores will break up their matching sets to do this. While it will likely cost you 15 -20 percent more for this luxury many say it is well worth it considering how much time we spend in bed.

Will I Feel The Divider in The Middle? The thermal divider in the middle is very soft and pliable and typically is not felt. If you own a wood frame waterbed and are a couple that likes to snuggle and sleep close together towards the middle we have heard complains. This is significantly less noticeable on dual softsides with thick padded tops and water mattresses that are not over filled.

What do I think of Dual Waterbed Mattresses? Personally I love them. I’ve slept on one for nearly 14 years. My wife likes a cooler mattress and with the dual my 90 degree temperature does not bother her while keeping me toasty. My dual softside waterbed mattress has less motion and disturbance created by the bed than most any other mattress made. This is important because I am a light sleeper. Finally mobility is a breeze when draining because I can handle the drained mattress without help. My dual mattress have given me nearly everything I have ever asked for out of a mattress.

About organic mattresses

Our Savvy Rest Mattress is a great choice for people that want to purchase a mattress that can have a positive impact on their health, the environment, and the indoor environment where they sleep. Savvy Rest Mattresses are built using both raw materials that are sustainable but also raw materials that will degrade when disposed of in our precious landfills. Potentially harmful chemical Off Gassing from added fire retardants is a concern and it is found in nearly every modern mattress built today. So what is the remedy? It’s simple non toxic certified organic wool. It’s sustainable and it naturally retards flames in a manner that not only complies with all federal fire safety laws but exceeds them. Their really durable non toxic fabric cover is made from certified organic cotton and it too is very sustainable . Finally natural botanical latex rubber has it all sustainability, is non toxic, and may possibly be the most durable mattress core offered in mattresses today.

Do you find it difficult to turn over in your current mattress?

Perhaps you have thought about something that most people don’t when they begin considering and planning for their next mattress purchase, the difficulty of changing sleeping positions. While it’s true we all have our favorite snuggle spot in the bed where we like to nest, it’s inevitable that at some point our body is going to cry out as result of lying in the same position for an extended time. In order to relieve the discomfort from pressure points, repositioning and flipping over is a must and depending on the type of mattress you own, more work may be necessary and in the case of other mattresses it may be nearly impossible to do the simple things we take for granted like turning over.

1.)Water beds hard to turn over in

The two waterbeds, soft sides and hard sides both can be difficult when it comes time to change sleep positions. Mattresses that have less baffling will move more and offer less support and have been known to give many people trouble when moving or changing sleeping spots. Our tip to remedy the problem, purchase a high quality fully baffled mattress. The industry offers no motion beds that give maximum support and reduce the strain and effort needed to move around.

Also consider a soft side waterbed, they are modern day styled and often offer or come standard with the baffled mattresses we just mentioned. Not only do they reduce the difficulty of sleep repositioning, but are far easier to get in and out of.

2.)Memory Foam Mattresses are hard to turn over in

Similar to waterbeds modern day NASA foam beds are phenomenal at reducing the pressure points on the body that cause us to toss and turn. However the price that comes along with that is a sleeping surface that is often very difficult for some people to move around in. While some memory foam mattresses still have temperate reactive foams that are slow to recover leaving you in a temporary nest of sorts, know this Our tip to remedy the problem is quicker responding temperature stable memory foams are now available that make changing positions easier. While they don’t solve all of the issues concerning turning over and repositioning, it’s likely enough difference that most people can enjoy the latest innovations in sleep technology that actually reduces the need to turn over throughout the night.

3.)Pillow Top Mattresses are hard to turn over in

Pillow top mattresses may be the greatest and worst advancement of the bed to happen in the bedding industry. Pillow tops were the answer to the waterbed industries answer to firm mattresses and boards positioned between the mattress and boxspring. Having stole their business back, the mattress industry acknowledged comfort advancement by offering beds with a softer pillow top surface over a firm coil spring core. While turning over in these beds are rare problems sleep repositioning issues begin to arise. Over time the foam and fiber padding break down leaving the sleeper in a hole in the shape of a body impression with a ridge running down the middle of the mattress. The solution is to look for mattresses that offer high resiliency foams that don’t break down. Such products are being offered by companies like King Koil and Comfort Solutions. Another solution for those who love the feel of pillow tops is to purchase a firmer bed and add to it a replaceable mattress topper.

As a member of the Sustainable Furnishing Council and a voluntary member of Ameren UE Pure Power program, STL Beds has made a company wide commitment to ourselves, our customers, and most importantly to the environment to become a modern green company within the St Louis community. Recycle, reuse, and energy savings has been our company commitment since February 2008 when we took our first public steps to educate the community via our blog where we shared various ways to recycle mattress and box springs. Though these are great solutions for the time as to what a person can do with their old mattress set, today I am happy to announce that STL Beds has partnered up with a local company that is as committed to sustainability as we are and has agreed to recycle mattresses for our local customers.

Company that recycles mattresses in St Louis

Location STL Beds

Cost $25.00 (NOTE We are currently unable to provide this service till further notice)

Want us to Pick Up your old mattress? Fee is based on zip code, call for a free quote.

Mention this STL Beds article and used the “Promo Code STL Beds Recycles” with your purchase of a mattress set and we will recycle your old set for free.

What happens to the old mattress and box spring in the recycling process?

The typical mattress and box spring is made up of steel, polyurethane (p.u.) foam, cotton, fabric, and of course wood in the base. Solid recycling programs exist for the steel, and a market for the p.u. foam exists as well. Last but not least the fabric and wood that comes out of old mattresses and box springs are also recyclable. Our recycler is committed to seeing that these components are properly recovered and are reintroduced to the market place in a safe responsible manner.

Many waste disposal companies claim that the value of the recycled materials cannot be recovered from mattress recycling alone. We think the recyclable components of a bed make sense financially to be reclaimed as a responsible alternative to dumping them in our landfills which are running out of space. The fact is mattresses can take up to 25 cubic feet of space and can take hundreds of years to properly decompose.

As we have mentioned in previous articles there are a few operations that recycle mattress sets across the USA and even worse may not spread nation wide without appropriate funding. Since it typically costs $25.00 to dispose of a mattress set through most waste disposal companies, it is our hope that you will help us offset our costs to carry out this green effort buying paying a small fee to do so. We ask that you please consider our environment, long term sustainability, and support STL Beds in our personal effort to help change the way mattresses are disposed of in St. Louis. With your support we can make a difference right here in Saint Louis Missouri.

Coil springs made in various configurations can do many things for our bodies. However listen to the ads and sales peoples hype about beds and the manufactures that make them and it sounds like you will be whisked away to dreamland by miracle back saving coil designs. Some even make the claim to save backs in their name. Today we’ll look at one of our favorite designs the Independent Pocketed Coils. Simmons Pocketed Coil® is the original and most famously recognizable name and others brands have copied their design and attempted to knock it off surprisingly many companies have done a pretty good job doing it.

A Look at Pocketed Coils

Simmons uses high carbon steel springs that have been pre-compressed and placed into tough, non-allergenic fabric wrapped encasements. Other companies do not compress their coils springs and as an alternative they temper the coil springs so that they have a memory. This design often utilizes less steel overall, which is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact today coils are so strong that most every coil design built today will offer 10 years of useful life. Where newer mattresses fail is in which tends to fail much faster.

Motion Separation of Independent Pocketed Coils

Independently Pocketed Coils or Wrapped Pocked Coil Springs really deliver motion separation. Today’s cars utilize independent suspension, which allows each tire to independently respond to the roads surface. Independently Wrapped and Pocketed Coils work in the very same way. Each coil sometimes numbered in the hundreds and at times even over a thousand can respond to each specific body part for perfect support for every unique body shape for what we believe is best contouring coil design to be had.

Conformability of Independent Pocketed Coils

I have said before and I’ll say it again, mattresses don’t fix backs doctors do sometimes, but good support and conformability is key. A greater number of coils springs in a mattress does not always mean a better end product and it nearly always costs more. This higher number of coils can translate to better overall support for the body. A down side is that it usually means a thinner lower gauge wire is employed to make the coil. Interestingly the springs bounce with you and respond immediately. They envelop you with unique support not found in competing coil designs. To assure an undisturbed night of sleep STL Beds recommends that you consider some type of a independent pocketed coils design, it is highly unlikely you will find such motion separation it in a wire-tied spring system where coils are tied to one another.

We all know stories of how adults start smoking. Sneaking cigarettes from their parents and going out behind the house and sharing them with friends but is this bad habit starting earlier, perhaps as early as infancy? Yeah we thought that seemed pretty silly too, but if you were to interpret the mattress safety laws for crib mattresses put in place by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) you might believe such a statement to be true. Our government officials must think they do. Federal Fire Code CFR 1633, which went into effect July 1st 2007, requires your baby’s crib mattress to meet the same rigorous burn rate as an adult smoker’s mattress!

Does a crib mattress need to meet federal fire safety laws?

They do but are they really safer? There is little to no evidence that such safety requirements would make a difference in a high temperature flash over fire? As a matter of fact the health risks from potentially harmful chemicals far out weigh the benefits of safety in the event of a fire.

The government has shown little or no interest at all in the harmful effects on a developing baby from these likely hurtful fire retardant chemicals being used industry wide in mattresses today. From our perspective it seems they are more aware of the lobbyist for the large chemical companies and their interests rather than the long and short term affects on our children. As evidence grows due to the studies of independent researchers about the effects of fire retardants such as PBDE’s the EPA has taken notice and put them on its watch list. Potentially dangerous chemicals are now being found in the blood streams of infants and you have to wonder how their development both mentally and physically will be affected. It’s no secret that babies swallow, chew and suck on any objects in reach not to mention harmful airborne VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds)

Lead paint and cribs

We don’t use lead paint on cribs anymore so why would we buy a crib mattress with a fire retardant in them. You and I would not consider exposing our children to such an environment now that you have a choice. You can get a doctors prescription allowing a mattress to be manufactured without the fire retardants or you can get mattresses that pass the mandated law naturally with no chemicals, crib mattresses that utilize natural fire retardants like wool to meet the new safety requirements.

Bed Kit – Collapsible Beds

Sometimes we just can’t help it but if you are one of those people that move a lot then you know that your king or queen size mattress and foundation can be a major moving headache. The sizes of these mattresses are huge and in many cases they are extremely heavy and hard to maneuver through tight turns, get up and down stairs, or maybe you just can’t get someone to help you. The solution to your problem is called a bed kit.

What is a Bed Kit?

Bed kits come completely unassembled and come equipped with a zippered top that can be unzipped and removed and then set aside. Under the cover there are individual layers of latex rubber, memory foam or standard polyurethane foam. These more manageable layers are a lot smaller than your ordinary mattress making them only a fraction of the thickness and the weight of an entire completely assembled mattress. Regular mattresses will not collapse or fold without damaging them. In addition good quality mattresses with high number of coil springs can weigh a lot. There are other examples heavy high quality mattresses like a king latex mattress which can weigh 200lbs and have the rigidity of Gumby.

Bed Kit Advantages

• The mattress can be broken down into 3, 4 or more pieces.
• Smaller vehicles can be utilized or they can even be transported in a very small covered trailer or pickup truck with a shell. Try that with a regular king or queen mattress.
• When you arrive at your new destination you will find it easier to maneuver up and down small and narrow stairways.
• You won’t need help. If you move a lot you know it is commonly tough to find help, with a bed that moves in pieces you will not have to ask the best friend or relative to help you move that king size mattress again.
• A bed kit allows you to replace a bad component without replacing the whole bed. If your dog eats the cover, you have the option to replace the cover.
• If you don’t like the firmness of your bed you can simply replace one layer with a softer or firmer layer.
• Customized comfort. You can purchase split layers to get the exact comfort you need and while doing the same for the person sleeping next to you.
• Allowing each of you to sleep on a custom tailored bed.
