A Savvy Mattress Idea

A Savvy Mattress Idea video Transcribed:

This is the Savvyrest mattress or a sample of the savvy rest mattress made in layers and the way this particular mattress is made is with soft on top medium in the middle and firm on the bottom and what I’m going to do is disassemble and reassemble it how I like it and as you can see we have soft on top medium in the middle and firm on bottom now.

When I first designed this mattress I did it because I knew that there was no particular feel for everyone some people like things firm some people like things soft, and after teaching yoga for so many years I knew that everybody was put together differently everyone thinks differently, and due to us being put together differently everyone sleeps differently. And so there wasn’t going to be one configuration that was going to work for everybody, furthermore I knew people going into a showroom weren’t going to know what they were going to like from laying on something for a minute, three minutes or even 15 minutes. So you really need to sleep on something for a few nights to know how it’s going to feel for you long term night after night. So how I like my mattress is actually a lot softer than firm medium soft, so the way I’m going to build this up is with medium on the bottom soft in the middle and soft on top. Now when you first put your mattress together it’s good to get the bottom piece in there pretty perfectly because if you get the bottom piece in there right the others will line up perfectly, Now that medium is in there pretty good, here goes one soft, one thing that’s cool about this is that you can change it after you’ve experimented for a while. Three months to change out layers so if you find it to firm, for example if I had firm medium soft I know that is to firm so I have 90 days to mail it back and set it up how it is now. Just getting everything stuffed in here at the top, and there you have it medium and soft build just for me.

How to fix a bad waterbed odor

Waterbed Stinks, Smells, and Has A Bad Odor. How To Fix It.

1) Waterbed mattresses are made from PVC vinyl and to make it more flexible and pliable plasticizers are added and when a mattress is brand new and out of the box much like paint that hasn’t fully dried waterbed mattresses can sometimes have a stronger smell. The smell is similar to the smell of a blow up air raft used in a swimming pool. This smell dissipates with in a couple days or weeks after being unpackaged and exposed to air for a while. Some say to use a good vinyl cleaner but it too has a bit of a chemical smell and it really is only masking the smell.

2) If you notice a musty odor these can be tough to treat. Time and the following solution are the answer. The cause is typically bacteria growth. First look to see if there is moisture in the safety liner from a seam leak, puncture, or condensation. Start by cleaning and drying the mattress, heater, and liner. Don’t forget to clean bedding thoroughly as well. It is important to remove any possible mold and mildew. Leave the bed uncovered as long as possible to speed up the process of airing out. Dont forget to then turn up the temperature on your heater to at least 80 degrees to reduce or eliminate condensation which in turn causes mold.

3) The odor is coming from inside the waterbed bladder. If you have removed your plug and cap and the stench spews like a volcano from the open you have the most serious of waterbed odor issues. The cause is usually bacteria. This can either develop over time when the bed has been used without conditioner or has been introduced by way of a garden hose that has not been carefully flushed. Bacteria multiply rapidly in a warm wet environment such as a waterbed mattress. There are no guarantees but you can try the use of a waterbed shock treatment especially if the odor has permeated the vinyl. Follow the instructions exactly. This is a slow tedious process that may or may not work. If it does not you may very well be in the market for a new water bed bladder.

Always use a multi-purpose water conditioner regularly to keep the water in the mattress free from bacteria, but multi-purpose water conditioner will not fix a bacteria growth that has already started. Use of a shock treatment to clear this problem will be necessary. You will need to use the shock treatment for both the inside of the mattress, and also to wipe down the outside of the mattress, the safety liner, and the heater pad. Musty odors will permeate the vinyl to affect these other items, and if they are not treated, even though the bed had been treated, the odor will return.

An additional odor-causing source can be well water from private wells. Typically the water is not treated and there is often high mineral content. The solution is adding a second bottle of multi-purpose water conditioner. It may help keep the problem to a minimum.

At Savvy Rest we understand that different people have different needs when it comes to getting a comfortable sleep, so we’ve designed a mattress that’s customizable and with this video we will show you different ways to make your choice and get the mattress that best fits your need.

Savvy Rest mattress is built in layers of naturally latex this is an example of our serenity mattress it has three layers inside and each layer is 3 inches thick. We have two kinds of latex Dunlop and Talalay, the Dunlop latex is slightly more dense which makes it firmer and more supportive, while the Talalay latex is softer and more cushy with makes it more pressure relieving. We have three different levels of firmness between Talalay and Dunlop, Firm, Medium and Soft. The main goal when you’re choosing the layers of a Savvy rest mattress is to accommodate your body needs for cushioning and also giving your back and spine the support it needs.

Just some tips and pointers, if you sleep on your back we recommend you go with something a little bit firmer, and if you sleep on your stomach we also recommend you go with something firmer. Some say firmer is better, while that is true in some cases that is true but sometimes softer is also better in some instances, if you hasve trouble falling asleep at night soft is probably better, if you have any lower back pain we recommend you go with something more firm for support. If you toss and turn a lot it’s better to have a soft top that way your muscles can relax and you’ll be able to sleep more soundly throughout the night. I’m going to show you some of our common configurations, one of our most popular is going firm, medium then adding soft, for a slightly firmer feel you can go with firm, soft, then medium. For a firmer configuration, firm, medium, medium, the firmest configuration we recommend is firm, firm, and medium. Going back to our firm medium soft, you can add medium relief and softness by adding a soft layer of Talalay, our softest configuration in Dunlop is medium soft, soft, our most Popular configuration in Talalay is Firm, medium and soft.

As you can see you can mix Dunlop and Talalay into any configuration to make the bed the best it is for you.

D: Hi my name is Dominic.

G: Hi my name is Gretchen.

D: And we’re here to show you how to assemble your savvy rest mattress

D: This is the finished product and it can be assembled and laid upon our foundations or on a platform bed like this one. Lets get started.

D: The boxes will be marked to let you know what’s inside locate the box that has the casing in it and then set it up

G: The casing will come zipped together so always make sure the zipper is at the foot of the bed

D: Get your bottom layer bring the box close to the bed.

D: And always pull the latex out of the box by grabbing the plastic do not grab the latex because it can tear, also tip the box over and allow it to spill out.

D: Double off latex will have a top side and a bottom side the top side has small holes the top size has large holes place the small holes facing up.

D: Use a flicking waving motion to move the latex into position.

D: Get the corners of the latex down into the corners of the casing and line the edge up with the seam of the fifing.

D: This will be a snug fit to prevent the latex from shifting around so don’t worry if you have to um push and zip squeeze it in tightly as you go along.

D: Then as a final step locate the fifing underneath and give it a gentle tug to make sure all the slack is taken up that maybe underneath the mattress so that it is coming out to the edge as much as possible giving your mattress a well rounded finish.

D: And there you go.

Stopping Mattresses Movement

How To Stop Mattress Movement

Mattresses sliding off the box spring foundations may be one of the most annoying things to happen with the exception of your neighbor deciding to cut the grass at 7:00 am on the morning you get to sleep in late. While the dealing with the neighbor may be a potential Hatfield and McCoy situation, your mattress slipping of its foundation is an easy problem to resolve. So what causes a mattress to slide? While the problem is not a big one in the overall picture of mattress difficulties some models are more vulnerable than others as you will see.

One sided mattresses slip

Truthfully not so much, first of all most of today’s newer mattresses are one sided and have gripping non skid surfaces that are abrasive and rough surfaced just like the top of the boxspring foundation. When the bottom surface of the mattress comes into contact with the top half of the foundation everything generally stays in place and stops mattress movement.

Two Sided mattresses that move and slide out of place

Rare to find today the old flippable innerspring mattresses had two sides. While this seems like a good thing just remember that silky smooth fabric that makes the mattress feel so good also sometimes allows the mattress to race out from underneath you. These old classics didn’t and don’t have that advantage of the one side being non skid. This sometimes causes the bed to slide out of it’s position.

How to stop the mattress from sliding and moving

There is a solution to the moving mattress situation and it’s no further than your local department store, big box hardware center or store that sells area rugs. The answer is a simple non skid rubber rug gripper pad. It is that simple. The key is size, so don’t buy a piece that is too small. Be sure to measure the width and length of your mattress set. Find the closest correlating size and if need be cut the rubber non skid safety material down to size with a pair of scissors. While this may seem overly simple and somewhat silly it gets the job done on the cheap. The same solution used to keep tools from sliding around in a fancy tool box drawer or to line the cabinets that keep your dishes and glasses from easily moving around can be the solid stable solution to keep a mattress from sliding around.

How To Get Custom Mattress Firmness That’s Adjustable For Each Person?

It’s not a secret that we are all created in our own unique body design. We are all human beings but we didn’t come out of the womb with the same tastes. Whether it’s the food you like to eat, your taste in clothing, or the mattress we sleep on, it’s likely that if you share a mattress, what ever one person enjoys for comfort the other most likely will not. Hard, medium, or soft perhaps something in between how can we possibly get all of these unique comfort levels for each to sleep? Savvy Rest, Land and Sky, and other bed makers heard the question have listened to consumers that demand comfort on their respective sides of the bed. Each sleeper can now have Individual Adjustable Mattress Firmness and this is not an air or waterbed.

Each Individual Sleep Gets Three 3 Inches Layers

We don’t agree on our mattress, how can we build one that has a unique feel for each of us?

Quotes from customers:

“My husband likes it firm and I prefer it soft”

“We never agree on mattress firmness”

“My wife likes it firmer and I like it softer”

These unique custom mattresses are essentially like having 2 individual beds side-by-side with the look of one and are typically available in king and queen sizes. They consist of a top and a bottom that are made with one big durable luxurious mattress cover that can be unzipped and removed leaving a suite case like cavity for the bottom portion of the cover. Inside the cover somewhere between two to three solid 1piece 3” layers of latex foam rubber are placed which can be rearranged and arranged to achieve the ideal firmness. Each layer lies upon the other. Firmness of each layer can be the same or different helping to create customizable support and exact comfort that is just perfect for you and yours.

Two different firmness levels in the same mattress

Speaking of you and yours, Individual Adjustable Mattress Firmness can be customized by selecting split layers of latex foam rubber instead of solid one piece layers. This gives each sleeper the unique opportunity to build the mattress of their dreams.

I wonder how many people consider donating a used mattress as a recycling option?

While recycling mattresses reduces and repurposes mattress content, donation through reuse helps the environment and helps others. If you are thinking about buying a new bed or maybe you already did perhaps a dilemma has begun, what in the world are you going to do with your old mattress and boxspring? Landfills, waste disposal companies often charge an arm and a leg to dispose of them or only have convenient pick up times that serve them and besides that it really does seem senseless to throw it to the curb. Which brings us to mattress donation, donating a mattress and box spring is a great way to protect the environment and help someone out, but where and who can you give it too?

Donating a Used Mattress

Goodwill, Savers, and Salvation Army are some of the first places people turn to when they are thinking about donating a mattress set. While these are perhaps the more obvious choices there are certainly others. Additional avenues for donating bedding could include local church’s and religious organizationss or community group. They are commonly known for helping out individuals or families that are in need of such items and will frequently accept them if allowed to do so. Another donation avenue is to contact local thrift stores, food pantries, or shelters. In some of these cases they may not have a facility large enough to store items as large as a king size mattress and boxspring but we have seen situations where organizations will accept a phone number in order to contact you when a need arises for your bed.

Which ever method you choose to donate understand that laws can vary state by state and we encourage you to abide by any or all of them. Check out websites and make sure of all current rules of places like Goodwill or Savers etc. It is best to contact your local locations, but don’t be shocked if they are unable to accept used mattress or boxsprings donations. Because they don’t have the tools to prep them for legal resale as a source of their revenue they may have to refuse your offering.

When donating your used mattress set be honest in your posting or to the organization that is going to accept it.

Recipients don’t want someone else’s bugs, stains, or worn and torn bed. When posting online include pictures that show the beds shape which will help to increase interest. Craigslist.org, Freecycle.org, and Backpage.com are all websites where mattress sets can be offered to those looking for them for free. Finally don’t forget to mention the availability of a free mattress to family, friends, and coworkers. Commonly they need or know someone that needs your old mattress set as a way to get off the floor or the sofa. Although they may not be considered a donation other possible ways to give a bed away could be as close as your local university campus, posting a flyer on local bulletin boards in grocery stores or other highly trafficked areas.

Donating furniture like mattresses to a tax exempt organization or charity can have tax benefits. First you will need to make sure they qualify in order to justify your deduction. You will need to determine the fair market value and document it. The document showing proof of your charitable offering is a receipt that you will be able to give to the IRS when you file your taxes that not only benefit you but assist and help those in need.

If your first thought was ick, gross, or there is no way in hell I would ever buy a used mattress then we’d be in agreement. Perhaps there is a place for used mattresses and those that want to sell one.

On Flickr: mattresses_in_skip

Most legitimate mattress and furniture stores don’t sell used mattresses. There are a few that know enforcement of existing laws is lax at best bearing in mind it’s illegal in most states to sell one unless it has been properly cleaned and sanitized. Which is why most won’t bother with taking them in on trade buying them back considering their nasty, the health risks involved, virtually no recycling options available and stores are able to buy brand new ones for wholesale cost.

To the best of my knowledge the same laws do not apply to individuals wanting to sell their mattress. If you are one of those people that wouldn’t mind picking up a few extra bucks to put towards your new bed purchase we’re hear to help.

Where to sell a used mattress and boxspring?

Craigs List,

Backpage.com

Newspaper classifieds

Word of mouth (Tell friends, family, and co-workers)

Post signs in high traffic areas

Advertise on community billboards

Require local pick up only or charge for delivery. Only accept cash or Paypal as payment absolutely positively no checks or money orders to avoid online scams. You can sell your used mattress by means of a subdivision, garage, or yard sale do expect to get far less for it than by the other methods.

How to sell a used mattress and box spring?

Go the extra mile to make the old mattress marketable. People don’t want dirty or stained mattresses and they don’t want to see urine, blood, or perspiration stains or smell. They usually do not want one that is torn, lumpy or sagging badly, but if yours still has a little life in it then there will be a buyer for your old bed. No matter what you paid for it new, just remember to “Price the Mattress Set Right” because most people are not willing to pay more than a 100-200 dollars. Remember, your idea was to throw it away so any money is better than no money.

Tips and Good selling points to promote if they apply.

Consider having it professionally cleaned and sanitized if your bed is in pristine condition

Include that it was used in a non smoking environment

Mention that you do not have pets

Tell the consumer it was vacuumed regularly

Indicate that a mattress pad or protector was always used and was cleaned frequently

Include multiple photos showing the condition of the mattress set (This is a must)

Make sure your ad includes the original price paid including sales tax to establish a base line for negotiations.

Brand names appeal to buyers and they are more secure with them so if you have a used Sealy, Serta, Tempur Pedic or Simmons it’s possible to get a few extra dollars of value.

Include free delivery if you have the means to do so. Maybe even pad the price with a few extra dollars to cover your time and vehicle expense.

While many of us scoff at the idea of purchasing a bed used know that there are people less fortunate than us that would love to simply have a mattress to sleep on and can’t afford a new one. While the extra cash would be nice, you could help out your fellow man or woman and give it away for free via the same avenues mentioned above.

The best repair for this type of situation is a good ounce of prevention…

which we will discuss in a moment, but the truth is many beds never have enough support to begin with and especially when larger people are using them. Cracking, breaking, or splitting out are common failure in wood rails with down hooks. These down hooks slide down into vertical slots where horizontal receiving pins are located within both the footboard and headboard. The failure comes when too much weight is applied to the side rails. Another possible failure can be where the receiving pins in the headboard or footboard are not encapsulated by enough wood and fail, in either case repair is usually not an option.

How to prevent wood rails from cracking or splitting

The way to prevent such an issue is with supports like the ones offered from Glideaway MFG. If the wood side rails are new or still in good condition we use their BB8 steel cross supports they utilize heavy angle iron and have multiple adjustable legs in king or queen sizes. With enough feet and proper installation such a support is strong enough to hold even a soft sided waterbed one of the heaviest beds sold. For everyday use under average weight couples and lighter weight loads we recommend their G-FORCE support system which utilizes less steel and fewer feet. Both systems span the width of wood rails and lay where wood slats typically go. They screw firmly into place and help take load weight off of the down hooks and tranfer it to the floor safely and effectively.

What if my wood side rails have been lost or cannot be fixed?

It happens to the best of us and yes they do get lost especially in the case of moving companies. In the case of queen size beds we replace the wood rails with Glideaways all steel frame system. They call it their 62CS hook rails with an adjustable center support. It literally replaces the need for wood rails which are often covered by bedding and bed skirts anyway. Steel side rails and universal down hooks replace the wooden sides. The strong center support bar with adjustable feet keeps wide boxsprings supported properly and meets all warranty requirements.

For twin and full size models we use Glideaways number one for beds that have a headboard and footboard. These use the same rolled steel frame as the queen previously mentioned but not center supporting legs. Instead it utilizes a connecting wire that keeps the rails from spreading and looking like an old whiskey barrel.

If you choose to not use specialty frames as mentioned above and instead use wood slats this can be done. However we recommend that you utilize wooden board cut a minimum of 1”x 4”. In addition add at least a vertical center support from the center of each slat going down to the floor, this will act as a leg and offer strength that will keep the box spring from sagging. Repeat on each of the 5 slats.

Can the wood side rails be repaired?

Repairing solid wood or laminated side rails can be a hit or a miss undertaking and it is one that we do not recommend attempting. Have this done by a professional. We have seen people glue or scab the broken / cracked area only to have it fail or fall and do more damage to the bed.

As a whole mattress warranties are very similar from one brand to another but do not assume that they are all the same. First and foremost is to read the warranty card that comes with a new mattress. The reason being is that all Mattress and Boxspring Must Have Proper Support and the warranty card explains what is and what is not covered. You do not want your boxspring to sag or break prematurely only to find that you were required to have center support from the beginning.

Queen Support Spanning The Width

Today most boxsprings are not springy; they are rigid and non-yielding and go by the name foundation. Old time boxsprings may not provide adequate support for todays’ mattress because they give where they are not supposed too causing the mattress to appear as if it is sagging when it may just be an issue of a non-supportive foundation.

If foundations supports mattresses what supports foundations?

Order of Support from the bottom up: Frame, Box Spring, and Mattress. These three functional pieces work together to make up the bed. The frame regularly made of steel provides inflexible center support and in addition to support around the outer edges of the boxspring making the frame the key component base structure. The support needs to run the length of the boxspring or foundation which ever is being used and should also span the width. Sizes that require center support in order to comply with warranties are:

Queen

Split queen

Eastern king

California king size

Do I need a special bed frame?

King Support That Is Running Bed Length

There is not industry standard that is required but most will utilize heavy-duty tempered steel that is angled in an L-shape which is of equal length ranging from 1.25 to 1.5 this is sometimes called angle iron. Heavier angle iron is used to construct bridges and buildings, while lighter angle iron still very very strong is used for an assortment applications including heavy duty bed frames some of which are even adjustable. These steel pieces come together to frame up the sturdy wooden frame of the boxspring. Then steel supports are added to span either the width or length of the boxspring. There are feet added to give addition structural support to the frame and wide spans found on the larger size beds we mentioned earlier.

Why use a bed frame, do I need it?

The purpose of a Bed Frame is threefold:

* To elevate and raise the boxspring and mattress’ height and get it off of the floor. This will make the bed easier to get in and out of.

* To connect the headboard or headboard and footboard too

* To offer a solid structure for the boxspring to sit upon while still offering support so the entire system cannot sag.

Most of the traditional beds in the USA require a frame as a connector for the headboard or both headboard and footboard such as the four-poster bed. Where as other parts of the world like Japan don’t use a box spring nor do they need a one because the mattress maybe a futon mattress and is placed directly on the floor or on a platform.
