I was recently asked which holiday has the best mattress and furniture sales,

Memorial Day or Labor Day that got me thinking. Are we supposed to believe that Memorial Day or Labor Day Sales typically have bigger holidays sales than other annual holidays? What about after holiday sales? What are we doing living for the holidays?

Lets be realistic, just because a mattress or furniture store advertises that we’re saving a lot of money doesn’t necessarily mean that we are getting the absolute best price for that sale item. What about the other holiday sales Christmas, Thanksgiving, Fourth of July and so forth? I think we need to step back from the hype and use common sense here and remember that stores have to pay rent and their mortgage all year long. So why would they have only a sale or two a year say Memorial Day or Labor Day that are big? What makes one or both of them the best savings day of the entire year? Should we really believe that better prices during one of those two days are better than an after Thanksgiving sale? Come on people they have us sold and snowed.

Retailers are smart and know that my wife would love to have her bedroom filled with something gorgeous for her birthday, anniversary, Mothers Day, or Valentines Day helping her convert that old bedroom into her personal sanctuary. Perhaps retailers don’t think that a hard working laborers’ back deserves a new mattress? Do we really believe that mattress stores are really going to make him wait till Fathers Day before he can get one? What if he is not a father?

My point is this, great sales and discounts are available at various stores all through out the year. We would suggest before buying a mattress or furniture on a holiday that you shop to get the best price on an item you are interested in, in order to establish what it costs before the so called discount or sale. In addition never feel the pressure of an ending sale. Never get in a hurry and rush to close the deal because a sale ends today or Saturday and stop living for the holidays if you know what we mean? There are other holidays and there will be other sales.

Shopping tips:

· Decide on what it is you want to buy before a sale.
· Established base line price for that item.
· Many stores use “suggested”, “retail” or “compare at” prices. These are ridiculous and seem to be inflated to start with so they can discount 50% or more for the “big sale”
· Consider retail stores that use everyday low prices. Wal-Mart does this and they are the number one retail Department store.

365 days a year
Approximately 47 potential sales a year
What do retailers do for the other 318 days there are no holidays?

Holidays
1. New Year’s Day
2. College Football Championship Game
3. Martin Luther King Day
4. Groundhog Day
5. Super Bowl
6. Lincoln’s Birthday
7. St. Valentines Day

My Mothers Day Blog

In trying to put pen to paper and figure out what I could write for Mothers day, I discovered something someone wrote that went something like this

Oh brother, I forgot about Mothers Day.

I guess I’ll just have to deal with the guilt and all of her bit#%ing at me for not being there. I know it’s not right but I even offered to work just to steer clear of the whole family get together thing. They don’t need me at work, so now what should I do?

So then I started looking into other reasons people won’t see their mother for mothers day and here were just a few I came across:

• My mother hasn’t talked to me since ….
• I lost my mother in law last June to cancer she is the only person that treated me like their kid.
• My grandmother raised me; she is the definition of a mom.
• Dad says mom was the best person in the world and was a great mother, I never knew her and wished I could have had the chance to. I was too young to remember.
• My mom doesn’t live in the same city as me I miss her terribly.
• My mother annoys me all we do is fight when we get together.
• Mom has to work for Mothers Day I wish she didn’t have too.
• This will be the first Mothers Day without mom

These were just a few of the stories I read. All of them made me sad while making me think about my own relationship with my mom. I am now married and have my own family. I work with my father in our family furniture store and live fairly close to her.

Now the great thing about working for family is that I see my dad nearly everyday. The problem is that it seems I stay pretty on top of the day-to-day family happenings including those of my mom.

I love her dearly but don’t talk or visit as often as I should. I have often said the reason is because I don’t feel the need to find out what she is up to everyday since I’m usually brought up to speed through dad. Other times I guess for whatever reason I just don’t make the time. The stories I shared above were not stories I could relate too but to me were all very sad and are full of regret and sadness. I have no reason other than my own failure to pick up the phone or go visit my mom who is only a mere 20 minutes away. Maybe that is what Mothers Day might be all about to get kids like me off our butts.

Mothers Day is here so that I am reminded to remember and show appreciation for my mom Pam Belleville. So mom, even though I often fall short, way short of being the perfect son you always exceed being the perfect mom. Please take a moment to remember all of those kind of silly things that I did like come home with school drawings or make you breakfast on Mothers Day and while you reflect have a smile on me. Can’t wait to spend Mothers Day with you and the rest of the family down at the farm on Sunday.

I love you and Happy Mothers Day!
Doug

I woke up this morning and was going to blog about things that all involved the past the typical year in review for 2009. The truth is for the last three years my personal goals have all encompassed my future being about my family, friends, and business STL Beds. While starting my morning reading tweets on my STL Beds Twitter Page I read something that changed my mindset. A leader in the Social Media Market Chris Brogan questioned me along with thousands of others with his 3 Words for 2010 challenging each of us to set goals. One person on Chris’ comment section Tom Salzer pointed out that the annual one word resolution approach sometimes sets up an automatic fail mechanism for many people which I related too. This more broad 3 word approach is a way for me personally to set more attainable goals with the typical successes and failures along the way, so I would like to share mine with you. Thanks for the inspiration Chris Brogan.

My 3 Words for 2010

1. Build
2. Courage
3. Educate

Build
Construct new relationships, develop partnerships and communities at the same time supporting and cultivating existing ones in addition to recognizing their value. Get involved in conversation by not just participating but also initiating, and most importantly listening. Learning to trust others as they trust me and recognizing that trust and relationships in both business and personal will lead to enormous success in 2010 and beyond.

Courage
Have the courage to not follow others but to be the leader and really contribute while engaging steadfastly in both my personal life and within my industry because I don’t believe things happen by chance rather people accomplish things through courage.

Educate
I was never one that took much from school. It was always about the interaction and the relationships; I only now really understand the value of education. My goal is to have courage and build, and to do that I must be educated. Accomplishment comes from being tutored through reading, listening and recognizing that education is not just about being the student but teaching and sharing knowledge. Educating coworkers and customers is unfortunately an underrated under utilized strategic business tool I intend to act on.

I encourage everyone to think out your 3 words for 2010 and please feel free to leave yours in our comment section.
