Where Have All The St. Louis Waterbed Stores Gone?

Are there still any waterbed stores left in St. Louis Missouri? Yes there are. This is not a perfect compilation and definitely not scientific. I just wanted to document a little piece of St. Louis waterbed history and try to answer some questions concerning local waterbed stores in the Saint Louis area.

Are waterbeds just a thing of the past, a novelty item of days gone by, or a simply a fad? Denny Boyd, Marvin Rottenberg, and Dave Belleville apparently don’t think so. All still own and operate stores that carry waterbeds. Thanks guys for keeping them alive and kicking in St. Louis MO from all of the die-hard waterbed lovers.

So where are the waterbed stores now?

The Waterbed Store
Closed.
Was owned by Rich & Dallas Mange. Their commercials were pretty famous here in St. Louis MO. They usually ran around the time of Three Stooges.  One of the commercials featured Big Foot 4 x 4 driving over a Land and Sky Mattress. The commercials always featured a catchy little jingle that said, “For the rest of your life, it’s The Waterbed Store”

WOW Warehouse of Waterbeds
Closed
WOW Warehouse of Waterbeds was also owned by Rich & Dallas Mange. Their commercials featured one of the decent boys Steve Mizzaranni with his famous line “ If you ain’t sleepin on water, you oughta!” Screaming Woo Wee WoW Wow Warehouse of Waterbeds. Steve Mizerany became a St. Louis icon long before the WOW commercials. In the 1970s he took one for the team and “roller skated” through his appliance stores clumsily. He appeared in his own TV commercials with the hopes that you might come in and buy some of his appliances. Loved them commercials Steve.

Royal Waterbeds and Bedrooms
To the best of my knowledge no longer have any stores with that sign on their storefronts.
Denny Boyd owns the name Royal Waterbeds and he still has several stores in the St. Louis area that regularly advertise on TV called The Bedroom Store. Denny a graduate from University of Columbia MO, opened Royal Waterbeds in the 70’s. Later on he opened Boyd Flotation, Accent Furniture, and purchased the rights to the name Blue Magic waterbed accessories (Wal Mart and many other stores used to stock their waterbed conditioner and a few other items)  and is one of the most prominent industry leaders in the specialty sleep products today. They also featured a catchy jingle in the their commercials that just focused on their name “ Royal Waterbeds and Bedrooms”

Reopened under the name Furniture For Today and Mattress Outlet and is still owned by Marvin Rottenberg

Bedtime Story
Closed and was located on the out skirts of South County Mall

Spectrum Waterbeds
Closed its store in Webster Groves. I believe Gene Grace was the owner

Sleepy Hallow
Closed
Was located in Cape Girardeau MO. Reopened as Slumberland.

Rest Assured
Closed
Was owned by Carl Boyer

The Water Works Waterbeds and Sleep Center
Open
Originally opened in Crystal City MO and is now located in Arnold MO and is owned by Dave Belleville.
