I have tried both types and have found that a combination works best for me. I bought a good quality, plain top double sided mattress AND a three inch memory foam topper AND a good thick cotton fluff mattress pad.

What I like is that the mattress gives good support and the memory foam is soft enough to be comfortable but not so thick that it is difficult to move. The cotton topper dissipates the heat and keeps everything clean. And all can be changed as they get worn without having to replace my good base mattress.

Previously I had a very expensive pillow top mattress that had the topping 'pack down' very quickly. The full foam mattress was impossible to move in or get out of easily.

Also innerspring/topper arrangement came in very handy when older cat became weird and started repeatedly messing everywhere. I was able to take my toppers off and clean them or replace them as needed, while my mattresses stayed spotless. (I keep 'resistant' cover on the mattress under my toppers.)

hey guys,

I have to say, yes, memory foam mattresses are not always the best alternative. However, they do have their perks especially for some people with back problems and can be recommended medically.

Wow, I have been reading all these interesting comments. I have have been sleeping in the spare bedroom because my husband flops aroud so much, and because the spare bed doesn't cause back pain in me. We both used to sleep on that mattress and he always complained of discomfort. Yesterday we went to a furniture store and tried out the memory foam mattresses with the base that will raise the feet or head. We both loved it and spent a long time in the store testing each mattress. After I paid for it, the salesman warned me that it may smell of petrolium at first. That is why I came to this site. Now, I am afraid of the poisonous gas that the mattress will be giving off. If you spend a 3rd of your life sleeping and during that time you are breathing in small amounts of toxic substances, it can't be healthy. I am going to cancel the order today. Also, for those of you that have pain and tingling in the neck; I think it is because your spine sinks into one position and the vertebra get out of aligmnemt. Raising the head of the bed or foot helps me. Also, yoga and regular visits to a chiropractor really helped me with my pain. Now, in order to sleep in the same bed with my husband I have to find a mattress that both of us find comfortable. Thanks to everyone for sharing your experiences and opinions on this site.

Have new Sweda memory foam mattress (from (Fedde) and it has a terrible wet dish rag odor which transferred to my padding and bottom sheet. Have washed and sprayed with anti-microbial spray but cannot eliminate odor. If I had known this I would not have purchased this. The Tempurpedic my daughter has never had that odor.

My suggestion is to test your theory that it is indeed the mattress causing your issues. Remove the mattress from the environment. 30-90 days should be long enough to test your theory. If you determine it is the mattress causing you issues replace it with something non toxic, natural, organic etc.

18 months later, I'm sorry to say you probably will not have much luck going the warranty route, however it cost you nothing to try other than time and energy. Let us know how it goes.

my memory foam mattress is almost 18 months old and it is giving a bad odor giving me a nasal blockage and headache in the morning!

my room is small, about 11 x 11 feet and my mattress is huge, 6 by 6.5 feet. its 4 inch memory foam + 4 inch coir. now for 18 months i kept thinking that the odor was either out of the AC or the new furniture. turns out its neither. its because of the mattress. its bad enough to make me feel i'm breathing stale air in the morning when i wake up. since almost a year now i have been waking up with a headache. and i'm already prone to sinus attacks so am more sensitive to what i smell.

can u advice what i can do? its under a 10 year 'guarantee'

About 3 weeks ago slept our 1st night ever on our new all natural memory foam considered medium firm (all dunlop and natural molded foam). Like a few others have reported-- both my husband and I had strange tingling in hands and feet waking us every few hours. We knew memory foam would be an adjustment, so we rolled with it...but this particular reaction seemed odd given the marketed attributes to relieve pressure. Since then my husband has adapted. I love the memory foam sensation but the tingling has gotten worse in my arms. Even this morning I turned sides after he got up and within 15 min both arms were tingling. All my life I have slept well and thru the night usually with 2 turns in the night. We are both in good health and athletic (130 and 170lbs) although we had aches with the old mattress. Love being on the memory foam in general, and easy to fall asleep, but this tingling is not right. Any thoughts?

Hi,
We recently bought an orthopaedic bed with memory foam mattress from a well known specialist UK supplier. We were persuaded to pay a $400 surcharge for Memory Foam rather than coil sprung. I have arthitis.

The fortnight we had the memory foam was the worst experience for me at night. Too hot, can't move, unsupportive edges, difficult to get off. I've slept in some rough places working as a heavy plant driver but never as bad as that.

Fortunately the company has replaced the MF with coil sprung but currently has not refunded the surcharge.

In my opinion, MF is nothing less than a con, pay more for a lump of foam that costs zilch to make. The Emperor's new clothes spring to mind.

Thanks to everyone who posted here, I have been able to convince my husband that our memory foam mattress is killing me and I am not just being dramatic. My lower back hurts and my legs go numb, so many times I'll go sleep in the guestroom. Instead of throwing away this memory foam (that my husband sleeps well in), I am researching about cutting this king size bed in half and replacing my half with an "old-style" xl twin mattress!
